Leonard-Cushing Fight

The Leonard-Cushing Fight is an 1894 American short black-and-white silent film produced by William K.L. Dickson, starring Mike Leonard and Jack Cushing. Recorded on June 14, 1894, the movie is the oldest recording of a boxing match. Mike Leonard and Jack Cushing both take part in a specially arranged boxing match under special conditions that allow for it to be filmed and displayed on a Kinetograph. The match consists of six one-minute rounds.

Production

The movie was shot on June 14, 1894 inside a ten-foot ring, in Edison's Black Maria film studio. It was premiered on August 4 of the same year.[1]

Current status

As a film produced prior to 1923 its copyright has now expired and it is freely available on the internet to download. As of 2021, a 37 second clip of the movie exists, available at the Library of Congress.[2]
