Light: Science & Applications

Light: Science & Applications is a peer-reviewed, open access scientific journal co-published by Chinese institutions, the CIOMP, the Chinese Optical Society and the international publisher Springer Nature.[1][2] The journal has ties with the government of China. The editor-in-chief, Jianlin Cao is a former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.[3] This has some influence on the journal editorial policies.

Scope

Light: Science & Applications publishes both pure and applied research in optics and photonics, covering both cutting-edge and conventional topics.[1] Subtopics appearing in the journal include small-scale optics, optical material processing, optics in life science and the environment, special optics, optical data transmission, optical measurement, optical materials, manufacture of optical elements, organic optoelectronics, and guided light.[1]

Ties with the government of China and editorial policies of the journal

The journal is co-published by two Chinese institutions, the CIOMP, the Chinese Optical Society.[2]

The editor-in-chief, Jianlin Cao is a former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.[3]

The editorial policies of the journal are determined jointly by its Editorial Board and Springer Nature in accordance with the legal and regulatory requirements of China.[1] As such Light: Science & Applications does not publish manuscripts submitted by authors with Taiwanese affiliations containing "National" in the name of the institute, regardless of the scientific value and research quality. The corresponding author will receive a confidential email and be asked to remove the word "National" in the affiliations within 10 days.[nb 1] This policy is not explained nor disclosed explicitly in the Guide for Authors.[6]

The journal publishes regularly special issues for the anniversary of Chinese institutions, in which only researchers from these institutions are allowed to publish.[7] These issues and the associated articles are not labelled as advertisements.
