List of Devilman episodes
Devilman (デビルマン, Debiruman) is a 39 episode anime series that ran from July 8, 1972 to April 7, 1973 on NET (now TV Asahi).[1]
The series was released on VHS and Laserdisc by Toei Video during the 1980s. The whole series was released by Toei in DVD format two times, the first one as a DVD box in September 21, 2002[2][3] and later in two-disc releases through 2004.[4]
The storyline of the series is different from that of the manga and of the OVAs. It does not have an apocalyptic conclusion and the ending is a happy one for Akira and Miki.
The plot differences from the manga are:
- Rather than being a combination of the souls of Akira and Amon, Devilman is a separate, complete entity, replacing Amon in the series' narrative.
- Akira and his father are killed while mountain climbing in the Himalayas, and Devilman chooses Akira's body as a cover to disguise himself. As a result, Akira - now Devilman's host - is brought back to life, but gains a wild streak from the warrior’s spirit Devilman possesses.
- When Devilman/Akira moves in with the Makimuras, he falls in love with Miki and abandons his mission to pave the way for a demonic invasion of the human world. When the lord of the demons sends a succession of demons to eliminate Miki, Devilman/Akira fights to protect her.
- Miki survives at the conclusion of the series.
- Lala is introduced as a rival to Miki for Devilman/Akira's affections. She is actually a demon, appearing to be a beautiful teenage girl, but is harmless towards the cast, and ends up helping Devilman in his battles against the demons.
- Satan does not appear, and instead the main nemesis is Demon Lord Xenon, his second-in-command in the original manga. Xenon commands the Demon Tribe from the Realm of Ice. Xenon appears as a shadowy figure that appears very similar to Demon Lord Dante.
- Ryo does not appear, and instead there is Iwao Himura who acts as rival to Akira during the Zannin arc.
