The minister is a political appointee and oversees one of Austria's most important ministries. The minister commonly does not partake in the management of day-to-day ministerial operations, which are administered by the general secretary of the Interior, the ministry's chief bureaucrat. The minister rather serves as the chief representative of the ministry before the Cabinet, the National Council, supranational and European governmental institutions, and ultimately the news media. However, the minister does define the ministry's overall policies and supervises the work of the general secretary.

The incumbent minister of the Interior is Karl Nehammer (ÖVP). The minister is appointed by the president on advice of the chancellor.
