List of United States Navy ships named after US states

The table below shows commissioned US Navy ships named after one of the fifty states of the United States of America. If a state has no ship in commission named for it, the most recently decommissioned ship is noted.

Thirty-seven ships currently in commission are named after US states. Eleven states have ships that are under construction or authorized. Two state names - Kansas and South Carolina - are not in use.

The Virginia-class submarine building program envisions a class size of over thirty ships. Virginia-class submarines are, with three exceptions (USS John Warner (SSN-785), USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN-795)), and USS Barb (SSN-804) named after US states. As of November 2020, thirty-one have been named.
