Note
  1. Certain award groups do not simply award one winner. They recognize several different recipients, have runners-up and have third place. Since this is a specific recognition and is different from losing an award, runner-up mentions are considered wins in this award tally. For simplification and to avoid errors, each award in this list has been presumed to have had a prior nomination.

Mara began her acting career with television and independent films, such as the coming-of-age drama Tanner Hall (2009). She received two awards for her performance, one award at the Hamptons International Film Festival and another one at the GenArt Film Festival. The following year, she starred in David Fincher's biographical drama The Social Network. The film won Ensemble of the Year from Hollywood Film Awards and Ensemble Performance from Palm Springs International Film Festival. Also the film was nominated the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Acting Ensemble and the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association Award for Best Ensemble.

Her breakthrough came when she starred in Fincher's psychological crime thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) as Lisbeth Salander, which won her the National Board of Review Award for Breakthrough Performance and the St. Louis Gateway Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress. She also received nominations for Best Actress at the Golden Globe Awards and Academy Awards. In 2013, she played in Ain't Them Bodies Saints, which received a Best Actress nomination from Dublin Film Critics' Circle. Two years later, Mara's performance in romantic drama Carol won her the Cannes Best Actress Award. She also nominated the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress, and the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
