List of highest-grossing Nepali films

Although there are no definitive box office figures for Nepalese cinema, the following list of highest-grossing Nepali films is based on figures provided by producers, distributors and some news portals, for prominent films since 2070 BS (2013 CE).

The Nepalese film industry is relatively young. Many early films were produced by the Royal Nepal Film Corporation (est. 1971) for the government, which was more concerned with the country's cultural heritage than commercial success. These gradually built a film industry infrastructure and enabled private productions. The romance Kusume Rumal (1985) held the box-office record until this was surpassed in 2001 by the musical Darpan Chaya (these films would contend for the current box office record if figures were adjusted for inflation). New records were set in 2012 with the critically acclaimed crime thriller Loot and erotic thriller Chapali Height. These were broken by action-thriller Kohinoor (2014), which is considered Nepal's first blockbuster for exceeding रू 10 crore (100 million Nepalese rupees) worldwide,[1] and domestically outperforming Bollywood films. This record was then broken by the comedies Chhakka Panja (2014) and Chhakka Panja 3 (2018), installments of a trilogy which currently holds the top three positions with a combined worldwide gross of रू 48.5 crore (485 million Nepalese rupees).

  • The highest-grossing Hollywood film in Nepal is Avengers: Endgame with estimated box office collection of रू 5.2 crore (52 million Nepalese rupees).
  • The biggest domestic opening day by a Nepalese movie is रू 1.62 crore (16.2 million Nepalese rupees) by Chhakka Panja 2.
  • The biggest single-day box office receipts in Nepal is रू 2 crore (20 million Nepalese rupees) for Chhakka Panja 3 and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.
  • K.G.F: Chapter 1, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and Avengers: Endgame are only foreign movies from 2010 to 2019 to have a release which exceeded 50 days in Nepalese theatres.
