Lokomotiv Stadion (Kaliningrad)

Lokomotiv Stadion is a football stadium in Kaliningrad.[1]

History

Before World War II which situated in Königsberg that part of Germany, the stadium was called as Sportplatz am Friedländer Tor and then Horst-Wessel-Stadion.[2] After the War, Königsberg became part of the Soviet Union and the city was renamed Kaliningrad in 1946, also name of Horst Wessel stadium was changed to Lokomotiv. In the years 2016–2017, it was modernized for the upcoming World Cup 2018 (World Cup matches were played at the Kaliningrad Stadium in Kaliningrad, the Lokomotiv stadium was planned for one of the training arenas).[3] The capacity of the stadium is now 500 spectators.

International matches

Germany played 2 international matches in 1935 against Latvia and 1937 against Estonia which germans won all of them.[4] Match in 1937 was 1938 World Cup qualifying Germany-Estonia and Germany won by 4:1 in front of 18,000 spectators.[5]

German championship match

In Tschammerpokal football clubs of Königsberg such as SV Prussia Samland Königsberg and Königsberger STV played home matches in this stadium.

Other sports

In 2019, the stadium was one of the arenas of the European Under-18 Rugby Union Championship.[6][7]
