Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club

Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club[lower-alpha 1] is a Japanese multimedia spin-off project from the Love Live! series and its game series Love Live! School Idol Festival. It was first introduced in 2017 as "Perfect Dream Project" and was initially created as part of the game Love Live! School Idol Festival All Stars.[1] Unlike μ's and Aqours, the previous groups from the franchise, they are a group of individual school idols who compete with each other while working together to keep their school idol club alive. Together, they are referred as the Nijigasaki High School Idol Club.[lower-alpha 2]

They are featured in the spin-off game Love Live! School Idol Festival All Stars along with μ's and Aqours. They also appear as SR rarity cards in Love Live! School Idol Festival.[2][3] The girls were split up into groups of three to begin activities in three different apps before their addition to the game: Dengeki Online website (Kasumi, Karin, Setsuna), Famitsu App website (Ayumu, Ai, Rina), and the game's official website (Emma, Shizuku, Kanata). Each place is working as a separate room or branch office for the Nijigasaki High School.[4] An anime television series adaptation by Sunrise aired from October 3 to December 26, 2020.

Plot

Nijigasaki High School (虹ヶ咲学園, Nijigasaki Gakuen) is located in Odaiba, Tokyo. The school is popular due to its free school style and diverse majors.[5] The story centers on the members of the school idol club in Nijigasaki, who work together as solo idols and their attempt to prevent the club from being abolished. As the story progresses, more girls begin to participate in the club's activities.

Nijigasaki High School Idol Club

Yu Takasaki (高咲 侑, Takasaki Yū) / Protagonist
Voiced by: Hinaki Yano[6] (anime)
Yu is a second year at Nijigasaki High School who has been friends with Ayumu since childhood and lives next to each other. She belongs to the general course, but decided to transfer to the music course later in the anime series. Both Yu and Ayumu fell in love with school idols after seeing Setsuna Yuki's performance and decided to enter Nijigasaki's school idol club upon discovering that Setsuna is a student at their school. Rather than becoming a school idol herself, she decided to support Ayumu and other school idols. Her catchphrase is "I'm thrilled!" (ときめいた!). Yu is the anime equivalent of the Love Live! School Idol Festival All Stars' protagonist. Her name was decided through fan votes.[7]
In All Stars, the protagonist becomes interested in school idols after seeing a joint live between μ's and Aqours but after looking for a related club in Nijigasaki, they learned that the existing school idol club is on its last legs of survival and decides to rebuild and reform the school idol club. Unlike Yu, All Stars' protagonist belongs to the music course from the start and already owns a keyboard in their home. The protagonist acts as the manager and song composer for the rest of the members. The protagonist's gender is left vague in the game and is nameable, but is generally referred as "You" (「あなた」, "Anata") by other members.
Ayumu Uehara (上原 歩夢, Uehara Ayumu)

Ayumu is a second year who became a school idol after a suggestion by the protagonist, who is her childhood friend. Ayumu belonged to the general course. She is distinguishable by a semi short hairstyle, a hair bun with a tiny braid around it, and hairpins on her right side of her head. Ayumu likes to put effort toward everything, especially as a school idol. Her image color is pink.
Ayumu is described as a "hard-working type school idol" (コツコツ系スクールアイドル, kotsukotsu-kei sukūru aidoru).
Kasumi Nakasu (中須 かすみ, Nakasu Kasumi)
Voiced by: Mayu Sagara[8]
Kasumi is a first year who refers to herself as "Kasumin." Due to her full name, she's often called "Kasukasu" as a joke, which she hates (as it means "dried out" in Japanese). She belongs to the general course. She is the first person that the protagonist encounters at the school idol club, where she was striving to keep the club alive. She is distinguishable by her beige-colored semi-short hair and a star-shaped hairpin. She wanted to become a school idol more than anyone and sometimes tries to be mischievous towards her rivals. She also likes to send hate mails to her rivals, although sometimes it naturally becomes normal fan mail. Kasumi refers to the protagonist as "Senpai." Her image color is yellow.
Kasumi is described as a "black-hearted type school idol" (腹黒系スクールアイドル, haraguro-kei sukūru aidoru).
Shizuku Osaka (桜坂 しずく, Ōsaka Shizuku)

An honorable first year student and theater club member who was introduced to school idols by her admired senior, she belongs to the international exchange course. Shizuku is one of the five original members of the school idol club, but unintentionally departed as she became devoted to the theater club. She is one of the original N-rarity girls introduced in School Idol Festival; she originally was a Seiran High School student. She is distinguishable by her long brown hair and red ribbon. Her image color is aqua.
Shizuku is described as a "junior type school idol" (後輩系スクールアイドル, kōhai-kei sukūru aidoru).
Karin Asaka (朝香 果林, Asaka Karin)
Voiced by: Miyu Kubota[8]
Karin is a third year student who aims to become a model and has confidence with her body; she belongs to the life design course. Her personality is passionate and mature, but she also has somewhat of a pure side. She's good at coordinating clothes. Her image color is blue.
She is described as a "sexy older sister type school idol" (セクシーお姉さん系スクールアイドル, sekushi onee-san-kei sukūru aidoru).
Karin is regarded as "2018 MVP" for ranking first-place for three consecutive months; taking only 2nd and 3rd in the other monthly polls.[9]
Ai Miyashita (宮下 愛, Miyashita Ai)
Voiced by: Natsumi Murakami[8]
An energetic second year, Ai is an honor student despite her gyaru appearance. She loves to make puns especially using her given name ("Ai" means "love" in Japanese) and refers to herself as "Ai-san." She joined the school idol club because she likes to try new things. Her image color is orange.
Ai is described as a "true gyaru type school idol" (ガチギャル系スクールアイドル, gachi gyaru-kei sukūru aidoru).
Kanata Konoe (近江 彼方, Konoe Kanata)
Voiced by: Akari Kitō[8]
A third year who always looks sleepy and unmotivated, she belongs to the life design course. Kanata refers herself as "Kanata-chan." She often looks sleepy because she studies hard to keeps her scholarship. One of the original five school idol club members, she stopped coming to the club because she had to repair her exam scores; she agrees to return as Ayumu promised her that Shizuku and Ai would help her with her studies. She is one of the original N-rarity girls introduced in School Idol Festival; she is originally a Shinonome Institute student. She became a school idol to get motivation from her younger sister Haruka Konoe, another school idol introduced in the game. Her image color is purple.
Kanata is described as a "spoiled older sister-type school idol" (甘えん坊お姉さん系スクールアイドル, amaenbō oneesan-kei sukūru aidoru).
Setsuna Yuki (優木 せつ菜, Yūki Setsuna) / Nana Nakagawa (中川 菜々, Nakagawa Nana)

A second year who, for some reason, does not wear a school uniform nor had anyone seen her at the school. Setsuna is an otaku who likes to sing anime songs. Her image color is red. It is revealed that Setsuna Yuki is actually her stage name, with her real identity being Nana Nakagawa, Nijigasaki Academy's student council president. She belongs to the general course. She is one of the original five school idol club members and had left because she was unable to tolerate its atmosphere due to her strong feelings towards school idols. This caused the club's failing state. Under her student council president disguise, she commands the protagonist to gather 10 members in order to keep the club alive. After 8 members (excluding the protagonist) gathered, she reveals herself to be Setsuna Yuki and rejoined the club. Setsuna is described as a "Mysterious type school idol" (???系スクールアイドル, ???-kei sukūru aidoru).
Setsuna is regarded as "2017 MVP" for ranking first-place three times out of the six monthly popularity polls held; she held second-place in the other polls.[10]
Emma Verde (エマ・ヴェルデ, Ema Verude)
Voiced by: Maria Sashide[8]
A third year exchange student who came abroad from Switzerland. Growing up there, she loves what nature brings, like mountains and forests. She belongs to the international exchange course. Emma is distinguishable by her twin braids, freckles on her face and her well endowed figure. Her favorite food is bread and she is able to eat a lot of slices, as well as mixing it with other food. Emma is one of the original N-rarity girls introduced in School Idol Festival and she was originally named "Emma." She was a Y.G. International Academy student. Her image color is green, just like her surname Verde. She is one of the five original school idol club members; her absence from the club was simply because she went back to her home country for a while — leaving a letter that Kasumi misunderstood as a challenge letter from another school's club.
Emma is described as a "pure type school idol" (純粋系スクールアイドル, junsui-kei sukūru aidoru).
Rina Tennoji (天王寺 璃奈, Tennōji Rina)
Voiced by: Chiemi Tanaka[8]
A first year student who claims to have a very cute face, but is too shy to show it; thus, she covers her face with the "Rina-chan board," a small notebook with a drawing on it of a facial expression she made with Ai. During live shows, she wears a cat eared pair of headphones with a small monitor that covers her face. She belongs to the information processing course, explaining her well-informed personality on technologies. Her image color is gray. In one of Rina's bond episodes of the game, she eventually decides to reveal her face to the protagonist; in All Stars, after reading this story, the player is also able to remove Rina's mask during live shows.
Rina is described as a "face-hiding type school idol" (顔出しNG系スクールアイドル, kaodashi NG-kei sukūru aidoru).
Shioriko Mifune (三船 栞子, Mifune Shioriko)
Voiced by: Moeka Koizumi[11] (All Stars)
Shioriko is a first-year student who for some reason, wants to abolish the school idol club. She later become the student council president, taking Nana Nakagawa's position, so she can abolish the clubs she believes hold no merit for the school. Is it revealed that rather than personally hating the school idol club, Shioriko is just critically thinking about the educational aspects of certain clubs and doing what she feels is right. After events that occurred in chapter 17 of the game, Shioriko joins the school idol club. In August 2020, Shioriko joined the All Stars game's playable cast and Nijigasaki High School Idol Club as an official member, receiving a solo song, a 3D model, and cards obtainable within the games scouting boxes.

Lanzhu Zhong (鐘 嵐珠, Shō Ranju)
Voiced by: Akina Hōmoto (All Stars)
Lanzhu Zhong is Shioriko's childhood friend and is raised in Hong Kong. Her mother is the chairwoman of Nijigasaki High School. She is trilingual; she speaks Japanese, Mandarin, and Cantonese. She applies to Nijigasaki to study together with Shioriko along with her friend Mia Taylor. In All Stars, while yet to be playable, she got her own solo song as well as a 3D model.
Mia Taylor (ミア・テイラー, Mia Teirā)
Voiced by: Shu Uchida (All Stars)
Mia Taylor is Lanzhu's friend and is raised in New York. She is bilingual; she speaks Japanese and English. Unlike Lanzhu, Mia applies to Nijigasaki only because she was persuaded by Lanzhu. Like Lanzhu, she also gets her solo song and a 3D model while yet to be playable.
Haruka Konoe (近江遥, Konoe Haruka)
Voiced by: Kaede Hondo
Haruka is Kanata's younger sister and a first year member of the Shinonome Institute Idol Club. Like her sister, she was originally one of the N-rarity girls introduced in School Idol Festival, but did not place in the top three of the popularity poll that determined which girls would be a part of the "Perfect Dream Project." In All Stars, she appears in her sister's bond episodes.
Kaoruko Mifune (三船 薫子, Mifune Kaoruko)
Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa (All Stars)
Kaoruko is Shioriko's older sister and a supporting character. She is considered as caring for her sister, but Shioriko tends to feel uncomfortable for unknown reasons.

Broadcast and distribution

An anime television series titled Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club has been announced.[12] The series is animated by Sunrise and directed by Tomoyuki Kawamura, with Jin Tanaka handling series composition and Takumi Yokota designing the characters.[13] A public vote was held to decide the name of one of the anime's characters, Yu Takasaki, who is voiced by Hinako Yano and based on the player character in the game.[14][6] The 13-episode anime aired from October 3 to December 26, 2020 on Tokyo MX, SUN, and KBS, October 4 on BS11, and October 6 on region-exclusive channels.[15] It was also streamed live through the Bandai Channel, Line Live, and YouTube Live.[16] Muse Communication licensed the anime in Southeast Asian territories excluding Thailand, where it is licensed by Dream Express (DEX).[17] Funimation licensed the series and streams it on their website in North America, and on AnimeLab in Australia and New Zealand.[18] Nijigasaki High School Idol Club perform both the opening and ending themes, respectively titled "Nijiiro Passions!" (虹色Passions!) and "Neo Sky, Neo Map!".

Seeing that there is a School Idol Club at Nijigasaki High School, they try to find the club room. However, when they reach the club room, they meet Nana who tells them that the School Idol Club has disbanded. On their way home, Ayumu confesses her love of school idols to Yu and tells her that she wants to start being a school idol. Yu agrees to help Ayumu become a school idol.

Kasumi sneaks into the student council's office to steal the School Idol Club's nameplate. However, finding that the former School Idol Club room is occupied by another club, she gets caught by Nana who scolds her. Not wanting to give up her School Idol dream though, Kasumi recruits Ayumu and Yu to the club. In a secluded place, Kasumi and Ayumu record their self-introductions to upload onto a streaming site to attract more members. However, Kasumi pushes Ayumu too much to make her self-introduction 'cute' which leaves Ayumu embarrassed. While Kasumi feels troubled by how she forced Ayumu in the self-introduction, Ayumu gets advice from Karin to pitch herself for someone she knows. Realising this, Ayumu goes to Kasumi to record her self-introduction again as her genuine self which was positively received by Yu and Kasumi. Meanwhile, Karin and the other School Idols confront Nana in the student council room where Karin declares that, since they could not find Setsuna Yuki in the student directory, that Setsuna must be Nana. She forces Nana to explain what happened to the School Idol Club.
553"Shouting Your Love"

During the confrontation between Nana, Karin and the other school idols, Nana declares that she quits being a school idol, but lets the others continue preparing for Love Live without her. Nana later meets Yu while she plays the piano in the music room. Here, she explains that she quit being a school idol as she felt that she hurt herself and the others while forcing her ideas onto the others. After a chat with the other school idols, Yu later confronts Nana in the school rooftop to persuade her to come back to the School Idol Club. Yu tells Nana that she wants to see her happy as Setsuna the school idol, persuading her to come back to the School Idol Club. Setsuna reveals her school idol identity to the other students and performs "Dive!" before being welcomed back by the other School Idol Club members.

Watching Setsuna's performance on the rooftop inspires Ai and Rina to join the School Idol Club. They try out a few activities such as stretching, singing and a quiz. However, when the school idols discuss solo performances, Ai feels unsure about herself. While running to Odaiba the next morning, Ai meets Emma on the bridge. Emma tells Ai that her presence and positivity has helped the club move forward. From that conversation, Ai realises that she can move forward by having fun with the other school idols which inspires her to perform in the middle of the park. Ai's performance inspires the others to try solo performances in the hope that something amazing will happen.
575"Something I Can Only Do Right Now"

Seeing the success of Ayumu's self-introduction in collecting views, everyone decides to create their own promotional videos (PVs) as solo idols to introduce themselves. Having been assisted to wear costumes as part of her PV, Emma tries to convince Karin to join the School Idol Club. However, Karin dismisses the idea and tells Emma not to invite her to the School Idol Club again. The next day, Emma reads Karin's questionnaire from a fashion magazine saying that Karin is most interested in school idols. Inspired, Emma spends the afternoon with Karin before she confronts Karin about wanting to know her more. Seeing the doubt about her identity in Karin's face, Emma sings a song for her which inspires Karin to join the School Idol Club. After Emma's PV is uploaded, everyone is amazed by the increasing views and comments of Emma's PV.

Rina reminisces about when she met Ai while thinking about wanting to connect with more people. When Rina is at the game arcade with Ai, Ayumu and Yu, three of Rina's classmates run into them, and they mention how this venue is often used for school idol concerts, prompting Rina to say she will do a concert here. Encouraged by the other members of the School Idol Club, Rina asks them to help her prepare, and she makes a PV to advertise her upcoming concert. However, Rina is still concerned that she cannot express herself that well when talking to others, believing that she cannot change. When Rina does not show up for practice, the other girls go to her apartment, and Rina opens up to them about her insecurities under a cardboard box, prompting them to cheer her up. This gives Rina the idea to make an electronic monitor that hides her face during the concert. The next morning, her classmates invite her to lunch, and Rina accepts with the use of her "Rina board" notebook.
597"Haruka, Kanata, and Beyond"

Concerned that Kanata is overworking herself, her sister Haruka who is also a school idol at Shinonome Institute comes to check out Nijigasaki's School Idol Club. However, she learns that Kanata has been more sleepy lately, prompting Haruka to say she will quit being a school idol so she can help out Kanata more with the housework. Kanata tries to persuade her not to quit, but Haruka storms out of the clubroom. Haruka talks with the other club members the next day, telling them that she wants to stay in the club while also protecting her sister's happiness. On the day of what was to be Haruka's last performance, she witnesses Kanata perform, and the two sisters reconcile by Kanata suggesting that they support each other from now on both at home and as school idols. Haruka agrees to take over the cooking at home, but she still needs her sister to teach her how to cook.

Shizuku is told by the president of the Drama Club that she is going to give someone else the lead role for an upcoming play, but Shizuku asks to be given another chance to show she can do it. Kasumi becomes concerned that Shizuku seems gloomier than usual, so she takes her out with Rina to try to cheer her up, but Shizuku tells them not to worry about her. Shizuku continues to worry about revealing her true self to others because she is worried about people not liking her. Rina gives Kasumi the idea to confront Shizuku, telling her that although some people may not like her, she loves everything about her. Shizuku regains the lead role in the play and the performance goes well, including Shizuku's mini concert.
619"Friends but Rivals"

Haruka comes to Nijigasaki with Himeno Ayanokōji from Tooh Academy to invite the School Idol Club to Diver Fes, an annual music festival held in Odaiba, that they will also be attending. However, Nijigasaki can only perform one song, and they realize only one girl with have a chance to perform. Karin continues with her modeling work, and runs into Setsuna, Ayumu and Yu while trying to find a dance school to improve on her dance skills. After talking with her, Setsuna suggests they all discuss who will perform at Diver Fes again, with the others choosing Karin. After talking with Himeno on the day of the event, Karin starts to feel insecure about going on stage alone with such a large crowd. The other club members manage to cheer her up by showing her that she is not alone, and Karin pulls off the performance.

With the first school term now over, the School Idol Club prepares for a summer training camp at the school. They spend most of the first day cooking dinner, and Kasumi enlists both Shizuku and Rina so they can try to scare the other girls, only for it to backfire on them. Yu talks with Setsuna in the music room about having trouble finding something she loves to do, and on the way back, Ayumu seems them together. The next day, Ai suggests they play tag to break up the monotony of simply jogging, followed by them playing in the pool. Yu tells Ayumu that she will be more courageous and do everything she can for all of the club members. Yu talks to the club members about wanting to organize a school idol festival for various school idol groups.
6311"Everyone's Dream, My Dream"

Kasumi and Yu present a proposal for the school idol festival to the student council, but there are still some issues with it before it can be approved. The club bands together to fix what they need, starting with deciding on a venue. They also propose the festival to Haruka and Christina from Shinonome Institute, and Himeno and Misaki from Tooh Academy who all agree to participate. The club uses a suggestion box asking other students what kind of festival they would like to see. Meanwhile, Yu continues to work with Setsuna to work out the details for the proposal, something which Ayumu continues to take notice of. Kasumi and Yu later show all student council all of the suggestions they have received, and Yu tells them they have decided to have performances at multiple venues, prompting the student council to give their approval. Ayumu later hears from Setsuna that Yu has gotten better playing the piano. Yu invites Ayumu to her room, and tries to tell her about her plans for the future, but Ayumu worries about Yu becoming more distant from her.
6412"Blossoming Feelings"

Preparations continue for the school idol festival, but Yu remains preoccupied with what Ayumu told her the previous night. The girls start having individual brainstorming meetings with their supporters at school to work out the details for each of their performances and venues. Yu again tries to tell Ayumu that she has found something she wants to do, but Ayumu gets distraught over the thought of Yu spending less time with her as a result. Two days before the festival, the girls go to check out each of their venues. Ayumu reveals to Setsuna that she became a school idol because she wanted Yu to watch her perform, but now she feels like she is distancing herself from Yu due to the support she is receiving from others. However, Setsuna encourages her to see things through to the end. Yu and three of Ayumu's supporters show her the stage they have prepared for her, and Yu reassures her that her feelings for her will not change. Yu later tells her that she wants to play music and plans to transfer to the music course in the next school term.

The School Idol Club girls offer to help Yu prepare for her music exam so she can transfer to the music course. The school idol festival begins with each of the girls performing at each of their stages. It starts to rain after the end of the festival, resulting in a cancellation of the remaining performances. The rain stops after closing time at 7 p.m., but the vice president of the student council convinces the school to allow for one more performance with the entire Nijigasaki High School Idol Club. News of the festival spreads online, prompting other school idols groups to contact Nijigasaki about participating in the next one. Meanwhile, Yu sits down to take the music exam.

While working individually, the girls also released singles as group as well as divided into three subunits. The members of each unit were decided by votes from fans. Instead of three subunits consisting of three members each as previously seen with μ's and Aqours, the Nijigasaki girls were divided into groups of two, three, and four. Voting on the subunits along with their names concluded on June 10, 2019. The results consist of: DiverDiva (Karin and Ai), A・Zu・Na (Ayumu, Shizuku, and Setsuna), and Qu4rtz (pronounced "Quartz", Kasumi, Kanata, Emma, and Rina).[20]
