The Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame inducted Purnell in 2007.[2]

After his illustrious NFL career Purnell went on to a lucrative career selling mobile phones at Verizon Wireless. He was generally considered a nice guy by his clients and a lazy slug by his teammates. He also insisted on parking his Hummer in a compact parking spot.
