MV Mega Bakti

The Mega Bakti is a class of submarine rescue ship of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN). The ship was built and specially designed by Keppel Singmarine for the use in Malaysia.[1][2]

Development

Keppel Singmarine signed a contract with RMN on 12 Jul 2012. RMN received the Mega Bakti vessel officially on Sep 24, 2013 and placed under the TLDM Submarine Headquarters (MAKS) based on Teluk Sepanggar in Sabah. Mega Bakti is designed as a surface support vessel for submarine rescue. Mega Bakti offers its services in two forms. Main Operations implements SMER-I including demonstrations and training and acts as the Mother Ship to RMN submarine.

Mega Bakti can meet other requirements such as a platform while undergoing operation and training of ship diving, Search and Rescue Operations (SAR), as a training system for torpedo rescue (recovery) and Disaster Operations as well as humanitarian aid.[3][4]

Characteristics

The ship hosts Double Lock Decompression Chamber (DDC), Global Positioning System Intelligent Buoy Tracking System (GIB), etc.[5]

A remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) is a vehicle whose operator itself is not in the vehicle. Operators control it by using a cable connected to the Mega Bakti. ROV is used to install Distressed Submarine Ventilation and Depressurization System (DSVSD) at a depth of up to 400 meters. This ROV is capable of cleaning the obstacles at the escape hatch of Distress Submarine (DISSUB), capturing photos and videos and sending Emergency Life Support Stores (ELSS) pods.

The ELSS Pod is used as a medical aid, food and other necessities to DISSUB using ROV. Mega Bakti provided 12 ELSS pods capable of accommodating pressures of 65 bar.

Portable Underwater Telephone System is used to carry out communication between Mega Bakti and DISSUB.

Distressed Submarine Ventilation and Depressurization System (DSVSD) is installed on DISSUB to discharge clean air and drain out contaminated air from DISSUB. This system has been used by the French Navy and can reach depths of 250 meters.

Double Lock Decompression Chamber (DDC) is used to treat submarine crews with decompression sickness (DCI). Mega Bakti has 2 DDC units that can treat 6 patients in each DDC unit.

The Global Positioning System Intelligent Buoy Tracking System (GIB) is used to detect DISSUB positions stranded at sea and can detect up to 1,000 meters.

Mega Bakti has two fast rescue boats to perform submarine crew rescue operations at any time and is an intermediary element of communication between parent aircraft and DISSUB.
