Naming

The college is named after former king of Tripura Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Bahadur.

History

Maharaja Bir Bikram College (MBB College) started functioning in 1947 to meet the needs of college students who had migrated to Tripura from erstwhile East Pakistan. The-then Regent, Mata Maharani Kanchan Prava Devi, responded to the needs of these uprooted Bengali students and almost overnight obtained the affiliation of Calcutta University for IA, ISC, B.A. and B. Com. examination.[4][5]

Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Bahadur, the last king of Tripura, was the architect and founder who was affiliated to University of Calcutta. The king had planned to establish a college at Agartala as early as 1937.[6] An area of 254 acres of land (mostly Khas land plus a small acquired position) was earmarked for the college in the eastern part of the-then small capital town of Agartala. It was given the name "Vidyapattan". Construction began in 1937 for which a trustee board was formed. The construction had to be abandoned when World War II broke out and the ground floor was converted into an army hospital for British Army moving to and from Burma.

From the beginning, MBB College was affiliated to Calcutta University. Today the college offers instruction in 19 subjects: Geography, English, Bengali, Hindi, Sanskrit, History, Education, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Philosophy, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Psychology and Commerce (all in Pass and Honours standard).[1]

In the late 1960s and early 1970s there was a plan to upgrade MBB College into a postgraduate college, so postgraduate classes in History, Economics and Mathematics were started. The plan lapsed when Tripura was sanctioned by the UGC as a postgraduate centre of Calcutta University in lieu of a full-fledged university. In 1986 this postgraduate centre evolved into Tripura's own university.

Campus

The college campus has an area of over 264 acres. This includes many faculties, and the Central Library (one of the largest libraries in Northeast India).[7] Institutions such as IGNOU and Law College are also located on the campus.

The layout of the college is distributed into different segments. The main block, located in the central location, is the oldest building of the college. On its left lies the library. On the right-hand side of the main block is the New Science Block, which was opened in recent years. Near the new building lies the old science building, which consists of the Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology departments and their sections. The MBB Cricket Stadium lies opposite the college's main block and is almost spread throughout the area. The eco-park is open to everyone; it remains under the area of the college but is not actually its campus area. The government is taking steps to establish new biodiversity of flora and fauna in that zone. The territory of the college consists of a long chain of lakes. The exit road on the west meets the BBMC college.

The Central Library can be accessed by a membership card which is distributed from the first week of August. Students must present their fee card along with their photographs to the Library authority. MBB college has two hostels, one near the main building and one near the old science building premises.

The college canteen is located near the entrance of the MBB cricket field.
