The Maryland Breeders' Cup Sprint Handicap was born in 1987 and its inaugural run was held at Laurel Park Racecourse at seven furlongs. Since its second running, the race has been run on the Preakness Stakes undercard at six furlongs. The race has been run with several variations of name changes beginning as the Maryland Budweiser Breeders' Cup Handicap from 1987-1995. From 1996-2005 the race was called the Maryland Breeders' Cup Handicap and in 2005 and 2006 it was called the Emirates Airline Maryland Breeders' Cup Sprint.[1] The name was changed slightly to The Maryland Sprint Stakes and it was made a Grade III race in 1994.[2]
The Maryland Sprint Stakes (G3) is the lead off leg of the Mid Atlantic Thoroughbred Championships Sprint Dirt Division or MATCh Races. MATCh is a series of five races in five separate thoroughbred divisions run throughout four Mid-Atlantic States including; Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park Racecourse in Maryland; Delaware Park Racetrack in Delaware; Parx, Philadelphia Park and Presque Isle Downs in Pennsylvania and Monmouth Park in New Jersey.
