Early life and education
Gooding was born in Los Angeles to Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sara Kapfer. He is the middle of three children.[1] His paternal grandfather was Cuba Gooding Sr., the former lead singer of R&B band, The Main Ingredient and his uncle is actor Omar Gooding.[2] His paternal great-grandfather was originally from Barbados.[3] Mason attended Windward High School in California where he played varsity football for four years. Gooding graduated in 2015.[4] Gooding admitted that he wasn't the best student or the most social persona in high school.[5] Instead he focused on things he was very into, like sports and theater.[6] While his father supported Mason potentially becoming an actor, he had to wait until he was 18 to pursue acting professionally.[7] Though his mind was made up, Gooding agreed to go to college after visiting Cuba on set in New York.[8] Gooding enrolled in New York University Tisch School of the Arts to study dramatic writing and psychology. He left school during his junior year after he booked a few gigs to pursue acting full time.[7] His mother had a hard time accepting the change due to her experiences with his father.[8] However, he plans to finish his degree at some point.[7]
Career
In 2017, while he was still in college, Gooding found a manager and an agent and started booking roles.[8] He booked his first major acting role in the HBO's dramedy Ballers opposite Dwayne Johnson.[9][5] In 2018, Gooding booked his first major film role in Booksmart directed by Olivia Wilde in her directorial debut.[10] In 2019, Gooding was cast as Andrew in Love, Victor, the television spinoff of the 2018 film Love, Simon. Originally developed for Disney+, the series premiered on Hulu in 2020.[11] While he played football in high school, Gooding had to learn how to play basketball for the role. Gooding also appeared Netflix's Christmas themed romantic comedy Let It Snow later that year.[2] In 2020, he began appearing in Freeform's sitcom, Everything's Gonna Be Okay.[12] In September 2020, Gooding was cast in an undisclosed role in the fifth Scream film, which was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.[13] The film is scheduled to be released on January 14, 2022.[14][15]
