At the age of seven, Matthew emigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada with his parents. He returned to Hong Kong in 2004 and worked as a model. In 2005, he became the first ever winner of Hong Kong's Mr. Hong Kong male beauty contest and subsequently signed a contract with TVB.[4] Ko speaks fluent English, French, Cantonese and Mandarin, despite immigrating to Toronto (which caused him to forget some, but after his return to Hong Kong he picked it up again).
