Matthew Wright (American football)

Matthew Wright (born March 22, 1996) is an American football placekicker for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at UCF.

Professional career

Pittsburgh Steelers

Wright was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft.[1] He was waived on August 31, 2019, during final roster cuts.[2]

Tampa Bay Vipers

Wright was selected by the Tampa Bay Vipers in Phase 5 of the 2020 XFL Draft on October 16, 2019.[3] He was released during training camp on January 22, 2020.[4]

Pittsburgh Steelers (second stint)

Wright was re-signed by the Steelers to their practice squad on November 30, 2020.[5] He was elevated to the active roster on December 7 for the team's week 13 game against the Washington Football Team in place of the injured Chris Boswell, and reverted to the practice squad after the game.[6] Wright was two-of-two on extra points against Washington, and made his first career field goal from 37 yards out. Wright was promoted to the active roster before each of the final two games of the season against the Indianapolis Colts and the Cleveland Browns. Wright finished the season having made all four of his field goal attempts and all seven extra point attempts.[7]

Detroit Lions

Wright was signed to a reserve/futures contract by the Detroit Lions on January 22, 2021.[7]
