Newsworthiness

Eyes

In November 2020, while in hotel quarantine after returning from covering the 2020 USA presidential election, Roland made one appearance on News Breakfast that elicited a strong response from the audience. Viewers saw that his eyes had markedly different pupil (iris) openings. Roland later explained that this was the result of a traumatic incident when he was 19 years old (1988) when his right eye was struck by a pellet from a slingshot while he was the passenger in a car. His friend who was driving took him to hospital, and he was rushed to the Sydney Eye Hospital. After surgery, in which they eye was saved, he spent several weeks in the Eye Hospital, then further months with the eye covered by a patch. The pupil did not recover, and has been permanently dilated. This is only apparent when compared to his left eye. Separately, he is colour blind.[4]
