As of the 2014-15 school year, the district and its two schools had an enrollment of 996 students and 56.1 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 17.7:1.[1]

The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "FG", the fourth-highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. From lowest socioeconomic status to highest, the categories are A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J.[3]

For ninth through twelfth grades, public school students attend Spotswood High School in Spotswood as part of a sending/receiving relationship with the Spotswood Public Schools, which also serves students from Helmetta.[4][5][6] In 2013, Milltown and Spotswood had discussions of expanding the partnership between the two districts beyond the sending relationship.[7]
