The name is most commonly known as an epithet of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the son-in-law of Islamic prophet Muhammad, and is thus common among Shi'a Muslims.

Due to their rhyming nature, Murtadha is often confused with Mustafa which means "The Chosen One", an epithet of Muhammad.[3]
