History
The NPP was formed by the members of the radical leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and 27 other parties, worker unions, womens' rights groups and youth organizations including members of the Islamic community. The NPP is securalist unlike the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna which is Marxist.[6]
2019 election
As the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka was passed the opposition parties were nearly strong as the ruling. NPP targeted to be the main opposition passing the Podujana Peramuna. Anura Kumara later in a speech said that he weren't satisfied with the Podujana Peramuna becoming the ruling party and the NPP only getting 3 seats. When the 20th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka was announced, the group protested against it.[7]
Ideology
The National People's Power is ideologically centered to communism but it also supports democracy. NPP opposes the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna calling it anti-democratic.
The pre-dominant goal of the NPP is The Natonalization of Sri Lanka.[8]
