History and Overview

NAISR (previously AISR) was founded in 1959 to educate the post-war growth of American families brought to the area by the U.S. Military and international business. Over the following fifty years, the military presence in the area declined and the school has focused on becoming a more internationally minded school catering for a much more culturally-diverse population.

NAISR is a member of the Northwest European Council of International Schools (NECIS) and is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS). NAISR is also an IB World School.

The school Director is Neal Dilk, who joined NAISR in 2011.

School Programmes

EARLY LEARNING AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

The core academic subjects of Literacy (English), Mathematics, Science and Social Studies are taught by home grade teachers. Students also take part in 'specials' classes such as Music, Art and Physical Education with specialized teachers in these areas. The school places great importance on the learning of a second language and provides opportunities for pupils to acquire a high level of fluency. All children are required to take a second language and attend these classes daily.

Early Learning

Grades: Pre-Kindergarten 1 and Pre-Kindergarten 2 (approximately ages 3–4) In Pre-K1 and Pre-K2, children engage in a variety of learning activities designed to equip them with effective strategies for growth and development. Differentiated instruction is supplemented with hands-on activities and field trips that contribute to cognitive and physical development.

Elementary School

Grades: Kindergarten - Grade 5 (approximately ages 5–10) The NAISR Elementary School program offers students a strong academic foundation and provides a nurturing environment in which students can feel comfortable, safe and supported in order to learn to the best of their respective abilities.

Children are challenged to meet the standards of academic and personal achievement through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) by leaders in the field of international education. The IPC provides the framework that educators require to facilitate, and that students need to navigate, a primary school education that fosters each student’s development into an aware and active global citizen.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

A principal goal of the Middle School (Grades 6-8) is to provide students with a platform that accommodates a time of rapid intellectual and personal change in their lives. These years are marked with many significant transitions, including the shift from the self-contained learning environment as well as the potentially daunting transition into high school.

The International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC) provides an effective bridge from the International Primary Curriculum, and it prepares students for types of analysis and synthesis that are inherent in typical high school tasks. In addition, the IMYC program reinforces our school's Core Values, which provide consistency and reinforce our student’s development into global citizens.

HIGH SCHOOL

NAISR's High School program for students in Grades 9-12 is dedicated to preparing students for important challenges that lie ahead of them. To this end, there are two distinct phases to the High School experience: the pre-IB years of grades 9 and 10 and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in grades 11 and 12.

The IB Diploma Programme is recognized worldwide as an outstanding preparation for university studies. Furthermore, its philosophy and Learner Profile align with and reinforce our school's Core Values.

The High School years will prepare students for challenging external examinations while continuing to promote effective communication skills as well as the qualities possessed by true global citizens.
