Olivia Isabel Rodrigo (born February 20, 2003[3][4]) is an American actress and singer,[5] who is known for her roles as Paige Olvera on the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark and Nini Salazar-Roberts on the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Rodrigo signed with Interscope and Geffen Records in 2020, and released her debut single "Drivers License" in January 2021, which reached number one in various countries worldwide, including the United States.[6][7]

Early life

Olivia Isabel Rodrigo[8] was born on February 20, 2003,[3][4] in Temecula, California.[9] She is of Filipino descent on her father's side,[10][11][12] and German and Irish on her mother's side.[12][13] Rodrigo began taking acting and singing classes at age six,[9] and started acting in theater productions at Lisa J. Mails Elementary School and Dorothy McElhinney Middle School.[14] She moved from Murrieta to Los Angeles when she landed her role on Bizaardvark.[14]

Career

Acting career

Rodrigo first appeared onscreen in an Old Navy commercial.[15][16] Shortly after in 2015, she made her acting debut portraying the lead role of Grace Thomas in direct-to-video film An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success.[17] In 2016, Rodrigo received recognition for starring as Paige Olvera, a guitarist in the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark,[18][19][20] which she played for three seasons.

In February 2019, she was cast in the starring role of Nini Salazar-Roberts on the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which premiered in November of that year;[21] for the show's soundtrack, Rodrigo wrote "All I Want" and co-wrote "Just for a Moment" with co-star Joshua Bassett.[22] Rodrigo was praised for her performance,[23][24] with Joel Keller from Decider describing her as "especially magnetic".[25]

Music career

Rodrigo signed with Interscope Records and Geffen Records in 2020. On January 8, 2021, she released her debut single, "Drivers License", which she co-wrote with producer Dan Nigro.[26][27][28] Within the week of its release, "Drivers License" was critically acclaimed,[29] and broke Spotify's record twice for most daily streams ever for a non-holiday song: on January 11, Rodrigo's song had over 15.7 million global streams on Spotify, which she surpassed the next day with over 17 million global streams of the song.[30][31] The song debuted at number one on Billboard Hot 100,[32] and also reached number-one chart positions in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom. Rodrigo stated in an interview that "It's been the absolute craziest week of my life... My entire life just, like, shifted in an instant."[33]

Artistry

Rodrigo has named Taylor Swift and Lorde as her idols and biggest inspirations.[34][35][36] She has described herself as "the biggest [fan of Swift] in the whole world".[37]

Personal life

Rodrigo is an institute speaker and panelist for the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.[38]
