The movie was not a very successful venture but is still remembered for its brilliant screenplay and technical superiority.[4] It is considered as one of the cult classic movies in the history of Kannada cinema.[5] The film is also notable for the underwater fighting sequence [6] by Rajkumar at the age of 58 with a London-made artificial octopus shot in the Maldives ocean with a Canadian camera by a German cameraman.[7] It was the first Indian film to have an underwater action sequence shot in an ocean [8] outside India [9] without the help of oxygen mask.[10]

Reception
Riding on high expectations, Ondu Muttina Kathe received mixed response upon release, however, ended up doubling its investment. The film's budget was ₹23 Lakh and collected a share of ₹54 Lakh at the box office. That was the lowest share for a Dr Raj movie in the 80s. However, the movie still ended up making ₹30 Lakh profit. Moreover the movie just ran for 7 weeks (hardly 50 days) in cinema halls which again was the lowest for a Dr Rajkumar movie in the 1980s putting the then lowest Nee Nanna Gellalare to the second position. The low success rate of Guri, Ondu Muttina Kathe, Devatha Manushya and comparatively successful Parashuram (considered to be critically unsuccessful by the people) is said to have caused Dr. Rajkumar to temporarily retire from movies. He later came back through Jeevana Chaitra due to immense pressure from his fans. Over the following years, Ondu Muttina Kathe has achieved cult status which in turn is evident from it being frequently shown in Udaya TV and is considered as one of the most technically advanced films of the 80's era of Indian cinema.
