PASARS-16

PASARS-16 (Serbian: ПАСАРС-16) is a Serbian mobile hybrid short range air defense system in serial production[1] based on the new Fabrika automobila Priboj 2228[2] 6 × 6 general purpose off-road military chassis. Mounted at the rear of the vehicle, a rotary cab holds a single barrel Bofors 40 mm anti-aircraft gun and two RLN-1C/170 infrared surface-to-air missiles the system is linked with a modernized[3] M85 Zirafa air defence radar.[4] New programmable ammunition consisting of 1100 Tungsten pellets is developed to be used with 40mm gun giving to system Air-burst capability. Gun can use thermal camera to engage targets[5]

According to various sources, Serbia plans to integrate newly purchased French Mistral 3 surface-to-air missiles on PASARS-16 along with RLN-1C probably for export version.[6][7][8][9]

Versions

As of June 2020, three versions of PASARS exist:[10]

  1. Pasars-16 with 40mm gun and 9K38 Igla
  2. Pasars-16 with 40mm gun and Mistral 3 rockets.
  3. Pasars-16 with 40mm gun and RLN-IC/170 rockets

All versions can communicate and obtain data from different radars including Giraffe radar.

Design and Development

Unveiled in 2017 as prototype based on older FAP 2026 off-road military chassis by a Serbian state-owned intermediary company for the import and export of defense-related equipment Yugoimport SDPR, the PASARS-16 is designed by Serbian Military Technical Institute in Belgrade with the protected cabin being constructed by Serbian automotive and defence company Zastava TERVO of Kragujevac, Serbia.[11] The final assembly of the prototype is said to be carried out in Belgrade at the Srboauto plant.[12] Later versions besides the first prototype have gone through changes and serial production is to be done by FAP Priboj and PPT Namenska - factories that are part of state Defense industry of Serbia. At end of 2019, new vehicles are ordered from FAP[13] to start serial production of PASARS-16.

Production

Three companies are involved in serial production of PASARS 16, FAP Priboj is producing FAP 2228 6x6 chassis, Zastava TERVO is producing armored cabin while PPT-Namenska AD is finalist for hydraulics and integrating gun and rockets.[14]

Armament

Bofors 40 mm Autocannon

The PASARS-16 main armament is the Bofors 40 mm anti-aircraft autocannon. Designed in the 1930s by the Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors, during the 1970's Serbian arms manufacturer Zastava Arms acquired from Bofors a license to produce the L/70 version together with laser-computer group.[15] Ammunition for the autocannon is locally produced for domestic use and export by Serbian ammunition and manufacturing company Sloboda Čačak including ammunition of increased range[16]

The PASARS has been spotted with a laser rangefinder and day/night sighting system. Ammunition for the gun is fed in clips from the top with empty casings ejected forward of the mount.

RLN-1C and RLN-1C/170 Missile

The PASARS-16 Terminator's RLN-1C missiles where at first appearance at prototype stage represented as modified Vympel K-13 (R-13M) short-range, infrared homing air-to-air missile developed by the Soviet Union and commonly used on MiG-21 fighter aircraft.[17][18] Modifications have been made to improve the rocket's propulsion block, in order to effectively launch the missile from the ground. In addition to significantly upgrading the propulsion, Military Technical Institute Belgrade engineers have reportedly integrated a more powerful warhead with a modern proximity fuse and a modernized infrared homing system that directs the missile to the target. Later model shown in flight in MTI Belgrade presentation while destroying target shares little similarities with K-13 as all components are new and domestic and rocket has new designation RLN-IC/170.[19][20]

Length (R-13M) 2,830 mm (9 ft 3.4 in)
Wingspan (R-13M) 530 mm (21 in)
Diameter (R-13M) 127 mm (5 in)
Launch Weight (R-13M) 75 kg (166 lb)
Speed (R-13M) Mach 2.5
Range (RLN-1C) (RLN-1C/170) 12 km max
Guidance (R-13M, RLN-1C, RLN-1C/170) Infrared homing
