Gurhatta (Meaning: The killing of Whites) - The historic tomb area of the British adjacent to Ashok Rajpath is called Gurhatta. According to historians, the British East India Company handed over the reins to Mir Qasim Ali Khan, his son-in-law, in place of Mir Jafar, the Nawab of Bengal. Mir Qasim remained the Nawab of Bengal from the years 1760 to 64. At that time, the Mughal ruler issued a license named 'Dastak' to British companies for doing business in Hindustan, under which they were allowed to not collect business tax while Indian businessmen had to pay tax of forty percent of their business. Mir Qasim raised his voice against this discrimination. The end result was a massacre. According to the information, Mir Qasim had massacred about 80 European and local English prisoners. For this reason, even today, this area is called "The Killing of Whites" i.e. Gurhatta. The remains associated with it are still preserved here.

Phulouri Gali - Phulouri Gali is nearby Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk. there used to be Phulwari (Flower Garden) here decades ago. People used to come from far and wide to see the flower beds here. With time the Phulwari here was destroyed and the population settled. The name also evolved by time and changed to Phulouri Gali.
