Pedro Cayuqueo

Pedro César Cayuqueo Millaqueo (b. Puerto Saavedra, December 28, 1975) is a Mapuche-Chilean journalist and activist involved in the Mapuche struggle.

Biography

Cayuqueo has authored various books on opinion journalism and investigative journalism. He is director off Mapuche Times, and was also until 2013 director of the newspaper Azkintuwe, which was in cicurlation in Chile y Argentina for a decade until it closed down in 2013. From 2015 to 2016 he was TV conductor of the Mapuche culture program "Kulmapu" which was aired by CNN Chile and VTR. Cayuqueo has one daughter and lives at present in Temuco.

In late 1998 Cayuqueo joined Coordinadora Arauco-Malleco (CAM). He represented the organisation in 1999 before the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights en Geneva, Switzerland.[3] Back in Chile in May 1999 Special Prosecutor Archivaldo Loyola ordered his imprisonment in Traiguén accusing him of usurpation of land, theft of wood and misprision of felony. Other leaders of the CAM were also accused of the same crimes.[4]

The legal charges caused Cayuqueo to leave his law studies in Temuco Catholic University. He spent time in the prisons of Lebu, Traiguén and Nueva Imperial. After an internal fracture in Coordinadora Arauco-Malleco Cayuqueo left the organisation in 2001.
