People's Democratic Party (South Korea)
The People's Democracy Party (Korean: 민중민주당) is a political party in South Korea which was founded on 5 November 2016.[1][2] The party has called for an immediate end to the Korean conflict by striking a peace deal between North Korea and the south.[3] It aims to establish a people's democratic regime in which workers, farmers, and small merchants are the owners. The main programs include the independence of the nation through the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Korea, free housing, education, and medical care, and the military recruitment system.
History
On July 12, 2016, the Founding Preparatory Committee of the Hwansu Welfare Party was formed,[4] held a press conference on July 18,[5] and registered as a political party on November 21.[6] On August 15, 2017, it merged with organizations affiliated with National Liberation and People's Democracy and changed the party's name to the People's Democratic Party-Hwan Restoration Welfare Party.
On November 8, 2017, three members of the People's Democratic Party were arrested by the police on charges of sprinkling handouts and hanging a banner with a message against U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to Korea. On the same afternoon, the People's Democratic Party held a press conference in front of the Mapo Police Station and said, "Since yesterday [when President Trump arrived], a total of 7 party members were arrested for doing the same thing in downtown Seoul, and 4 of them were released."[7]
