The family’s name is an Italianized standardization by notaries in Rome of diverse renderings in Hebrew of the original Portuguese Figo (/ˈfiɣu/).[1][8] In one such rendering, the original had undergone Turkification as /ˈpiɟu/,[1][2] Turkish /f/ occurring only in foreign loans, before ultimately taking on the name’s current form.
