The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek called it "A standard late bebop and early hard bop date (but then again, hard bop was still fresh and new at the time, and McLean was at the forefront of it), the album is most notable for its two McLean originals".[4] Reviewing a CD reissue Alex Henderson said "Although far from essential, The New Tradition is a decent bop outing that will appeal to collectors, historians, and hardcore fans".[5]
