Principles of Optics

Principles of Optics, colloquially known as Born and Wolf, is an optics textbook written by Max Born and Emil Wolf that was initially published in 1959 by Pergamon Press. After going through six editions with Pergamon Press, the book was reissued by Cambridge University Press in 1997, who subsequently issued an expanded seventh edition two years later. It is considered a classic science book and one of the most influential optics books of the twentieth century.[1]

Background

Born had previously written a textbook on the subject in German, Optik [Optics], in 1933 and began looking for a coauthor for an updated English version of the textbook, to be published in the early 1950s.[2] Emil Wolf was chosen to help modernize Born's textbook, and the changes were significant enough, increasing the book by over 350 pages, for it to be released as a new title.[2] The initial edition of the book was released in 1959, prior to the discovery of the laser.[2]

Reception

The seventh edition was reviewed by Peter W. Milonni,[1] Eugene Hecht,[2] and William Maxwell Steen.[3] Previous editions of the book were reviewed by Léon Rosenfeld,[4] Walter Thompson Welford,[5] John D. Strong,[6] and Edgar Adrian,[7] among others.[8][9][10][11][12]

Peter W. Milonni opened his review of the book by endorsing the book's dust jacket description, stating it is "one of the classic science books of the twentieth century, and probably the most influential book in optics published in the past 40 years."[1]

Eugene Hecht opened his review of the book by comparing the task to reviewing The Odyssey, in that it "cannot be approached without a certain awe and the foreknowledge that whatever you say is essentially irrelevant".[2] Hecht then summarizes his own review, in order to help "anyone who hasn’t the time to read the rest of this essay" by stating: "Principles of Optics is a great book, the seventh edition is a fine one, and if you work in the field you probably ought to own it."[2] Hecht went on to state that the book "is a great, rigorous, ponderous, unwavering mathematical tract that deals with a wealth of topics in classical optics."[2] He noted that the book can be hard to understand; he wrote: "This is a tour de force, never meant for easy reading."[2] After analyzing some of the changes to the new edition, Hecht ended the review with the same summary as the introduction, emphasizing again that "if you work in the field you probably ought to own it".[2]

Publication history

The book was initially published in 1959 by Pergamon Press, with revised editions in 1964, 1965, 1970, and 1975.[13] The fifth edition was also reprinted in 1975 and 1977, followed by a sixth edition in 1980.[13] Between 1983 and 1993, the sixth edition of the book was reprinted seven times.[14] Some of these reprints, including in the years 1983 and 1986, included corrections.[13] The book was then reissued by Cambridge University Press in 1997, followed by the publication of an expanded seventh edition in 1999 with a corrected reprint published in 2002.[14] The Seventh Anniversary Edition, published in 2019, was released sixty years after the first edition and twenty years after the initial publication of the seventh edition.[14]
