Early life and education
Treviño, who is Mexican American, grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. His family struggled to make ends meet and they faced prejudice in the predominantly white neighborhood in which they lived.[1]
After high school, Treviño attended the University of Texas at Arlington, where he formed his own orchestra and started conducting. He then attended Roosevelt University in Chicago.[2]
Career
Treviño has studied under Leif Segerstam, Kurt Masur, Michael Tilson Thomas, and David Zinman.[3] He made his professional debut as a conductor in 2003 at the age of 20 in Wuppertal, Germany.[4] In 2010, Treviño won the James Conlon Prize for Excellence in Conducting at the Aspen Music Festival and School.[5]
Treviño guest conducts. He has made debuts at a number of top-level venues on short notice, including at the Bolshoi Theatre in place of Vassily Sinaisky in a December 2013 production of Verdi's Don Carlo,[6] as well as in June 2017 at the London Symphony Orchestra in place of Daniel Harding in a performance of Mahler's Third Symphony.[1][7] In February 2018, Treviño stood in for Donald Runnicles at the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich in a performance of Mahler's Fifth Symphony.[8][9] He has also guest conducted at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Vienna Symphony,[10] Munich Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France,[9] São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, Helsinki Philharmonic,[11] San Francisco Symphony, Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra.[12]
From 2009–2011, Treviño was associate conductor for the New York City Opera.[10][13] He was then associate conductor at the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) from 2011–2015.[5][14]
For the 2017–2018 season, Treviño assumed the role of music director of the Basque National Orchestra, succeeding German conductor Jun Märkl.[15] In June 2018, Treviño's contract with the orchestra was extended through the 2021–2022 season.[11]
In the fall of 2019, Treviño became the chief conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, succeeding Marc Soustrot.[10]
In October 2019, Treviño signed with the classical record label Ondine. Planned releases included a Beethoven symphony cycle with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra and a survey of American music by such composers as Howard Hanson with the Basque National Orchestra.[16] The Beethoven cycle was released in 2020, described by Scott Cantrell in the Dallas Morning News as "an impressive accomplishment."[17]
