Vick was the only fullback selected in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft. It is customary for fullbacks to be selected in the mid-rounds or later, as fullbacks are often not considered as important as other skill players on offense, which was why many were surprised by the Jets selecting Vick in the first round, especially with future All-Pro lineman Harris Barton still on the board.[1][2]
