Rosario Lo Bello

Rosario Lo Bello (born 4 November 1945 in Syracuse, Italy) was an Italian international football referee.[1]

Career

He officiated 7 international matches and was member of FIFA in 1983–1992. He attributed a EURO 1988 qualifying matches[2] and others were in friendly matches. He gave a red card in EURO 1988 qualification match played between Austria-Romania (0:0) to Romanian Miodrag Belodedici in 88th minute.[3]

In club football he officiated some UEFA competition matches such as Champions League (6) and UEFA Cup (7).[4] He refereed 193 Serie A matches and 18 Coppa Italia matches in 1983–1992. He also officiated three Coppa Italia finals in 1983, 1989 and 1992. The memorable event about Rosario Lo Bello is Verona-Milan match that played in 1989–90 Serie A season, which he refereed mathc controversially (with sent off players of Milan Frank Rijkaard, Marco van Basten, Alessandro Costacurta and also coach Arrigo Sacchi), and in end of season Milan lost the Scudetto to Napoli.[5][6]

Personal life

His father Concetto Lo Bello was famous Italian international referee also. In 1984 he was suspended for 6 months by the Italian Referees Association for disciplinary reasons and because of this he lost international status.[7]

He was awarded Giovanni Mauro Award in 1986 that is Referee of Year in Italy
