History
The airline was established and started operations in 1969 in a joint venture partnership with a Malaysian company with the name MAC (Malaysia Air Charter). In 1972 it split from MAC and adopted the current name. It is wholly owned by Merukh Enterprises.[2]
The Indonesian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) has suspended SMAC's air operating certificate (AOC) due to the fatal accident of a CASA C212 on Bintan Island which crashed killing all on board.
A Preliminary investigation has found 1) that the Pilot in Command was not qualified for that type of flight. 2) No permission was obtained to carry out a flight test. 3) a Spare engine was carried on board during the flight. ref
