History

The company was founded in 2014 by James Bradfield Moody, Sean Geoghegan and Craig Davis.[5] The idea behind creating Sendle was to simplify logistics, to provide cost-effective courier services and modernise postal services in the process.[6] Sendle became Australia's first carbon neutral delivery service to neutralise greenhouse gas emissions generated by the transport of their packages.[7] The company received major media attention in Australia when they started offering services significantly cheaper than the government owned Australia Post.[8]

In 2015, Australia Post filed a trademark dispute against Sendle for their slogan “Post without the office”. In 2017, the court ruled the lawsuit in favor of Sendle which allowed them to use the trademark and slogan.[9][10][11]

In August 2016, Sendle announced that they had surpassed 100 million kilometres of deliveries across the Australian market and announced their Series A funding round for further expansion.[12] Later in the year, the company won 2016 NSW Telstra Business Award in the new business category.[13] Sendle also been recognised as one of Australia's Top Most Innovative companies in 2016 and again in 2017.

In 2018, the company announced a partnership with eBay and became one of their delivery partners.[14] It started offering a two-day delivery guarantee to eBay retailers who were selling their products on the eBay's platform.[15] In May 2018, the company launched their first advertising campaign “Why post when you can Sendle?", featuring John Batchelor and his puppet.[16][17]

Operations

Sendle operates in these core markets: retail merchandise; and parcels and logistics within the domestic and export markets.[18] It also offers delivery services for businesses and community organisations. The company primarily focuses on small to medium-sized business, online retailers, services, and offers pickup and delivery services for flat-rate pricing.[19]

Partnerships

In 2017, Sendle announced their partnership with DHL eCommerce to facilitate delivery to 220 countries and territories from Australia.[20][21] They also integrated with major e-commerce companies including eBay, Shopify, Shipstation, WooCommerce and Xero to streamline order handling.[22][23][24]

Funding

In 2015, Sendle first raised $1.8 million in seed funding backed by NRMA Motoring Services.[25][26] In 2016, Sendle raised another round of $5 million in funding from Full Circle Venture Capital, Black Sheep Capital and Rampersand.[27][28] In 2019, Sendle raised a Series B round of $20 million led by Federation.[29]
