South32 is a mining and metals company headquartered in Perth, Western Australia. It was spun out of BHP Billiton on 25 May 2015.[1] The company is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange with secondary listings on the Johannesburg and London Stock Exchanges.[1]

The company is a producer of alumina, aluminium, manganese, silver, zinc, lead, nickel, metallurgical coal (for steelmaking), and thermal coal (for power stations).
Operations
South32 has operations in Australia, South Africa, Mozambique, Colombia and the United States, and has a minority partnership (36%) in an alumina refinery in Brazil.[2]
- Worsley Alumina at Worsley, Western Australia (86% owned) is a bauxite mine and alumina refinery. A portion of the alumina is exported to South32's African smelters for conversion into aluminium.[3]
- Illawarra Metallurgical Coal near Wollongong, New South Wales operates two underground metallurgical coal mines;[3]
- Australia Manganese (60 per cent interest); GEMCO mine on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory;[3]
- Cannington Mine silver, lead and zinc mine, 200 km southeast of Mount Isa, Queensland;[3]
- Cerro Matoso nickel mine and smelter in Northern Colombia (99.94%)[3]
- Hillside aluminium smelter in South Africa at Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal;[4]
- Mozal aluminium smelter (47.1%) in Mozambique[4]
- Energy Coal includes four coal mines and associated processing plants near the towns of eMalahleni and Middelburg in Mpumalanga in South Africa.[4] As of 2020, South32 was negotiating the sale of these assets.[5]
- The Wessels underground and Mamatwan opencut manganese mines at Hotazel in the Northern Cape.[4]
- Metalloys smelters at Meyerton, Gauteng in South Africa.[4]
- Hermosa, a mineral resource development option located in Arizona
- Ambler Metals (50%), a mineral resource development option located in Alaska

TEMCO, a manganese smelter located at Georgetown in Tasmania was sold to GFG Alliance in January 2021
