Speed limits in Hong Kong

Most expressways in Hong Kong have a speed limit of 80 km/h. Older ones, such as Island Eastern Corridor, Tsuen Wan Road and Tuen Mun Road, as a rule have a 70 km/h limit. Expressways in the north of the New Territories and others including the West Kowloon Highway are limited to 100 km/h, and North Lantau Highway to 110 km/h, which is the highest speed limit in Hong Kong.

All roads with streetlighting at intervals of 200 metres or less have by default a 50 km/h limit. Some mountain roads, most notably on Lantau Island, have a lower 30 km/h limit. Most sections of numbered routes that are not part of expressways have a limit of 70 km/h. Many connecting main roads, longer roads and dual carriageways also have the speed limit increased to 70 km/h and 80 km/h for a few other connecting roads. Many roads with this speed limit are bypasses.

Note that for safety reasons, the speed limit for buses, medium and heavy goods vehicles is 70 km/h for all roads with a general speed limit at or above 70 km/h.

A speeding offence under 10 km/h over the speed limit is not usually enforced; many drivers in Hong Kong travel within this range.
