St. Peter Cathedral, Matagalpa

The St. Peter Cathedral[1] (Spanish: Catedral de San Pedro) Also Matagalpa Cathedral[2] Is a religious building of the Catholic Church located in the city of Matagalpa[3] capital of the department of the same name, in the Central American country of Nicaragua.[4] As its name indicates it is dedicated to St. Peter, one of the apostles of Jesus.

The current structure of Baroque style established as a parish church by the Jesuits in 1874. By 1879 the central part was completed, but the works were stopped in 1881. The Roman Catholic Church of San Pietro of the city of Matagalpa was completed in 1887, but lacking important details including: the plaster, the baptistery, the interior decoration and the pulpit, it was consecrated 10 years later in the 1897. Only in 1924 received the title Of Cathedral.

It is a church that follows the Roman or Latin rite and is the main church of the diocese of Matagalpa (Dioecesis Matagalpensis) that was created by Pope Pius XI through the bull 'Animarum saluti'.

It is under the pastoral responsibility of Bishop Rolando José Álvarez Lagos.
