History

State Insurance was formerly known as the State Insurance Office. Previously, it had been known as the State Fire and Accident Office.

The State Insurance Act 1990 repealed the State Insurance Act 1963 and created State Insurance as a State Owned Enterprise.

In late 2014, State closed all but one of their branches citing that the reason for doing so is 94% of customers are choosing to conduct their business online or over the phone.[1] The final remaining branch is located in Riccarton, Christchurch, and is open due to the specific customer needs in the area surrounding the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

The company has had well-known commercials that feature the song "Break My Stride".[2]
