Synopsis

The game is a third-person adventure game, in which the player controls a stray cat in a cyberpunk city, populated by robots. It has open world elements, with a focus on the atmosphere and art.[1]

Development

BlueTwelve co-founders Koola and Viv began working on Stray, originally known as HK_Project, as they wanted to pursue an independent project after working at Ubisoft. After they shared some footage from the game on Twitter, Annapurna Interactive reached out in April 2016 to publish the project.[2] BlueTwelve Studio was founded in 2016 for the development of the game.[3] Development took place in Montpellier in southern France. Stray was heavily influenced aesthetically by Kowloon Walled City, while the gameplay experience was specifically inspired by the founders' cats, Murtaugh and Riggs.[2] The game utilises Unreal Engine 4.[4]

The game was announced on June 11, 2020, at PlayStation's Future of Gaming event.[5][6][7] At the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2021, the game's release window was revealed as October 2021.[8] The game will be released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.[5][6][7]
