Sultan Alam Shah School

Sultan Alam Shah School or simply Alam Shah (abbreviated as SAS; Malay: Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah) is a residential school in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The school is under the royal patronage of the Sultan of Selangor.[2] Sultan Alam Shah School is one of the schools in the country awarded with the title High Performance School (Malay: Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi) and in 2014 Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah was recognised as one of the ten Schools of Global Excellence (SGE) (Malay: Sekolah Kecemerlangan Global) in Malaysia for the recognition by the Ministry of Education on its academic merits, strength of alumni, international recognition, network and linkages.[3]

Not to be confused with Alam Shah Science Secondary School or Sultan Alam Shah Islamic College.

History

Kuala Lumpur

The construction of the school was planned together with that of the Maktab Perguruan Ilmu Khas (MPIK) (Special Teachers' Training College), Jalan Cheras in 1958; however this was delayed to 1961. The school was completed in 1962, at a cost of RM1.3 million. On 7 February 1963, the school enrolled its first students. The first principal was Mr. Halimi bin Haji Sharbaini and his name is now given to one of SAS' residences, Halimi. On 7 March 1964, the school was officially opened by His Majesty the then Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah, with the Selangor Menteri Besar and the Minister of Education.

The first intake consisted of students from Forms 4-6, including 8 female students in Form Lower 6. In 1974, enrolment of Form 1 students began and in 1974, the school halted the intake of female students with the opening of a girls' boarding school, Sekolah Seri Puteri. Meanwhile, the enrolment of National University of Malaysia (UKM) matriculation students began in 1975 and was ended in 1998.

Putrajaya

On 26 April 2003 the school shifted its premises to a new 142,000 m2 (1,530,000 sq ft) campus in Putrajaya.

On 24 March 2006, at the official opening of SAS's new campus in Putrajaya, HRH Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafudin Idris Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah had proclaimed the school to be renamed as Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah.

On 7 February 2013, the school celebrated its Golden Jubilee Celebration which was launched by Tan Sri Aseh Che Mat, President of Putrajaya Corporation who is also an alumnus of Sekolah Alam Shah.

Rally and blazonry

The school motto is Chita, Usaha, Jaya which means Aspire, Strive and Succeed. The armorial bearings are a white tome, a torch, a banner bearing the school motto (with 'Chita' spelled out in classic Malay language) and Jalur Gemilang-derived crescent and star set on red and yellow in the school blazonry.

The red and yellow colours signify dynamism and caution; 1963 is the year SAS was founded; the torch signifies education; the crescent and star symbolise the nation, Islam and Rukunegara; the colours blue and white represent the values of serenity and purity; and the book represents knowledge.

Co-curricular

Rugby

The school Rugby team is one of the pioneer in Malaysian youth rugby which had produced various rugby players nationwide. The school team participated in The Super Six Schools Rugby Tournament. The tournament that mostly hold traditional rival games is played amongst the best rugby playing schools in Malaysia – Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK), Sekolah Tuanku Abd Rahman (STAR) Ipoh, Sekolah Dato Abd Razak (SDAR) in Seremban, Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah (SAS) in Putrajaya, Sekolah Menengah Sains Selangor (SMSS) and Sekolah Menengah Sains Hulu Selangor (SEMASHUR).[4]

In 2011, the school band have been featured in a flashmob style, reality programme, Refleksi Orkestra in conjunction with Orkestra RTM 50 Golden Jubilee.[5][6]

Others

In athletics and other major sport like football, golf and badminton, Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah have good participations in Majlis Sukan Sekolah-Sekolah Malaysia (MSSM) events through every year. Some of the student manage to represent state of Selangor (2006 and before) and Putrajaya (2007 and onward).
