In the summer of 2010 the school moved to a new building in the southeast part of town. The new high school includes a gym that seats 2,100 and has an indoor track.[3] The former school became a combined 8th and 9th grade upper middle school and was named Cardinal Heights Upper Middle School.
Extracurricular activities
Swimming
Before the construction of the new high school in 2010, the Sun Prairie Area School District did not have a swimming pool. The girls' swim team practiced in Waterloo, Wisconsin and did not host home meets and the boys participated in a co-operative swim team with Madison La Follete High School (before 2008) and with DeForest High School (2008-2010). With the addition of a pool to the new Sun Prairie High School, SPHS now fields its own boys' and girls' swim teams.[4][5][6]
State championships
Academic Decathlon
Sun Prairie's Academic Decathlon team has placed in the top three at the Wisconsin state finals five times.[17]
In April 2014, the Sun Prairie Academic Decathlon team represented Wisconsin in the Large School division of the National United States Academic Decathlon online national competition taking fifth place among the large schools. They repeated this in 2016.
Music
The Sun Prairie High School Jazz I has been selected to compete in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Band competition in New York City 12 times since the festival's conception, most recently in 2018.[18][19][20]
