Sweco (originally "Swedish Consultants") is a European engineering consultancy company, active in the fields of consulting engineering, environmental technology and architecture.  Sweco is Europe’s leading architecture and engineering consultancy company, established in 13 countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, UK and Poland). Sweco carries out projects in 70 countries annually throughout the world.[1]

Sweco plans and designs sustainable cities, industries and community infrastructure. The company assist with analyses, calculations and studies and the planning, design and construction of what is to be built. This is done with a focus on three segments: buildings and urban areas; water, energy and industry; as well as transportation infrastructure.

Three major megatrends are also charactering the assignments: urbanisation, digitalisation and climate change. Urbanisation creates a need for redesign and expansion, digitalisation lays the groundwork for smart cities and efforts to prevent and manage climate change cut through all aspects.[3]

The company is listed on NASDAQ OMX Stockholm since 1998 and has acquired more than a hundred companies of varying sizes.[4] Åsa Bergman is President and CEO since 2018.[5]

History

The foundation of Sweco was established already in 1889.[6] The Swedish MSE Hugo Theorell then founded the company Theorells Installationskonsult AB, which was later acquired and became Sweco Systems AB.

Sweco was formed 1997, when FFNS acquired VBB group. The name Sweco is an abbreviation of "Swedish Consultants", a name used by VBB in international projects. Since the execution of the first international project in St. Petersburg in 1902, Sweco has carried out projects in more than 100 countries.

Sweco has grown profitably both organically and through acquisition. Sweco has extensive experience in acquisitions and has been a force for consolidation in Sweden, the Nordic region and in northern Europe. Sweco has since 1998 acquired over 100 companies[7] and has its historical roots in a number of companies, among them:
