TEAM University Tashkent

TEAM University - is an entrepreneurial university in Tashkent, Uzbekistan[2] Founded in April 2020 by the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers number 241 from 2020, 18th April [3] and granted a license by the State Inspection for Supervision of Quality in Education with number 0007.[4] The university is the first entrepreneurial university in Uzbekistan and it is founded as a private, non-state owned institution.

In 2020 TEAM launched the inaugural admission to its International Foundation Course (level 3 UK NQF), which was validated according to the recommendations of Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) on July 29th 2020. Additionally, TEAM is one of the few Universities in Uzbekistan that offers Winter start for its International Foundation Course.[5]

From 2021 TEAM starts admission to its degree level programmes (levels 4, 5, 6 UK NQF) in the areas of:

  • Entrepreneurship with International Business
  • Entrepreneurship with Digital Innovations
  • Entrepreneurship with Creative Industries

Partner institution

TEAM is partnering with London South Bank University[6] (LSBU) in the UK to validate its programmes. LSBU was chosen as a partner of TEAM after a through consideration of other potential candidates from the UK, and has been selected for its support and outstanding record of entrepreneurial education for which it has been award a title of “Entrepreneurial University of the year” in 2016 by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.[7]

Governance

The founders of TEAM University established an independent Board of Trustees to oversee and ensure that the university demonstrates and promotes those values. Since the beginning of the university, the Board has been constituted and is chaired by an independent member with extensive experience in the administration of higher education institutions. The Board drafted a constitution with a majority of representatives who are independent(non-sharing). This ensures that the position and interests of the founders and shareholders are limited. The constitution requires the Board to safeguard against financial self-interest and allows the university to be regulated by strong standards of management and business principles. The Board is composed of the following members:

  • Alan Peter France, OBE - Independent Chair

Alan P France – Honoured with the Order of the British Empire, MBA, BA with Honours in Economics and Cert FE, ITP and CIM. Alan entered the University of Westminster in Tashkent in 2002 as 1st Deputy Rector and was responsible for policy growth and all academic affairs, personnel, academic assistance, academic administration, teaching services, as well as the general infrastructure of management and leadership. In 2011, Alan was awarded the Order of the British Empire by the Queen for his services to higher education in an international context. In January 2020, Alan left WIUT in order to become the Chair of a new international institution – TEAM University, the first private university in Uzbekistan founded by a group of leading entrepreneurs in the region.

Zafar Khashimov is a co-founder and member of the Board of Trustees of TEAM University. He holds:

  • M.Sc in Management Information Systems, Sussex University, Brighton, UK;
  • M.Sc. in mathematics from Tashkent State University, Tashkent, Uzbekistan;
  • B.Sc. in mathematics from Tashkent State University, Tashkent, Uzbekistan;

He is: CEO and founder of korzinka.uz; Owner of FLO, Red Tag Uzbekistan, Balton Trading Asia Company;

  • Hikmat Abdurakhmanov - Founding Member

Hikmat Abdurakhmanov is a co-founder and member of the Board of Trustees of TEAM University. Hikmat has successfully graduated from the University of World Economy and Diplomacy. Earning his Bachelors (2001) & Masters (2004) in International Economics with excellence at UWED. He earned his second Master’s degree from the prestigious University of St Andrews in International Business in the UK(2006). This allowed him to calibrate his skills in the business world, launching prosperous enterprises in fields such as business tourism, leasing, business development & trade (HMPartners, GroundZero, TechnoPlaza, CLG Leasing, UzAutoLeasing, Uzbek-Chinese Trading House, IBT, GEN Uzbekistan, MediTech, Western Production Technologies, Batiskaf Consulting).

  • Muzaffar Kasimov - Founding Member

Muzaffar Kasimov is a co-founder and member of the Board of Trustees of TEAM University. Muzaffar Kasimov and Hikmat Abdurakhmanov are partners since they entered the University of World Economy and Diplomacy in Tashkent and continue their educational journey at Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO.

  • Timur Abdukayumov - Founding Member

Timur Abdukayumov Entrepreneur is a co-founder and member of the Board of Trustees of TEAM University. He is an entrepreneur, co-founder of Batiskaf Consulting. Has over 15 years of experience in business leading. Before starting his business, he worked in the Intersok Group of Companies and the Center for Economic Research under the Office of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

In 2008 he graduated from the State Technical University, the Institute of Oil and Gas, Oil and Gas Management (Uzbekistan), and in 2017 the Professional Management Program (PMP) at the Uzbek-Japanese Center for Human Resources Development (Uzbekistan).

The areas of his competencies are situated in the field of project management, building effective business processes, organizational development of companies with different types of activities - from industry to services.

Andrew Wachtel received his BA from Harvard University and his MA and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley (Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures). He has immense practical and professional experience in leading educational departments in a number of universities. Andrew is currently living in Bishkek, where he involved in a variety of research advisory projects in Kyrgyzstan, Russia, China, and Uzbekistan.

Andrei Volkov is director of the Institute for Public Strategies Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO. He is deputy chair of the council for the promotion of competitiveness of the leading universities of the Russia among the world’s leading scientific and educational centers. One of the leading experts in the field of educational policy in Russia. In 2005 Volkov became Advisor to the Minister of Education and Science of Russia.

  • Eldor Mannopov - Independent Member

Eldor Mannopov is the Managing Partner of Dentons’ Tashkent office. He specializes in corporate, contract, commercial, construction, and tax law. Recognized as a leading lawyer in projects and construction, Eldor assists clients in drafting commercial agreements including EPC, procurement, construction, services, and/or works agreements (according to both Asian Development Bank or World Bank standards).

  • Nazira Beishenalieva - Independent Member

Nazira Beishenalieva is an entrepreneur, an alumna of the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) and Harvard Business School (HBS), chairwoman of the Board of Directors of CJSC “Bank of Asia”, member of the Board of Trustees of the American University of Central Asia board member of HBS Club of the GCC (UAE, Dubai) and board member of Asia Pacific M&A Association, a platform which unites M&A professionals and a number of M&A associations from Asia Pacific countries (regions). Nazira is co-founder of Pro KG Club a platform that unites professionals living in the Kyrgyz Republic and abroad.

  • Alisher Khasanov[8] - CEO/Rector

Alisher Khasanov is a Rector at TEAM University. He graduated from Tashkent State Technical University, Faculty of Business Administration, with a BA degree in Finance and Credit in 1997. Postgraduate MA degree in International Business Management he got from Westminster International University in Tashkent in 2011. Currently he is PhD Fellow on the subject area of transition to corporate governance in higher education institutions of Uzbekistan.

Course offerings

International Foundation Course

The International Foundation Course [12] (IFC) is a one-year full-time programme of study that TEAM offers to students who wish to pursue their desire to study on a UK degree programme in Uzbekistan. The course has been designed to equip students with the necessary skills and competencies for successful academic study on an undergraduate programme. All students who successfully complete this course will be awarded a TEAM Foundation certificate and admitted to one of the undergraduate programmes offered at TEAM University.

Entrepreneurship with International Business

The aims of BA (Hons) Entrepreneurship with International Business include:

  • To equip the student with knowledge and understanding of contemporary international business and entrepreneurship practices, including an awareness of the interaction between business and the economy, technological, social and institutional dimensions of the international environment in which it operates;
  • To widen employment opportunities for graduates by delivering a balance of professional, academic, and practical knowledge and skills, and by providing career support via placements and internships;
  • To develop students’ entrepreneurial mindset by strengthening their analytical reasoning, problem-solving skills, creativity and strategic thinking in an international business context.
  • To provide students opportunities to apply their knowledge in practice within an international business environment; coping with relevant economic, cultural, social and technological issues;
  • To create opportunities for students to further strengthen their soft skills, including but not limited to, leadership, critical thinking, teamwork and communication;
  • To develop students’ professional business practices with an emphasis on cross-cultural environments and international business context via practice-based learning;

Entrepreneurship with Digital Innovations

The programme provides students with a broad-based education in business with the themes of ‘Enterprise’, ‘Management’, ‘Digital Innovation’, ‘Entrepreneurship‘, and ‘Professional Practice’ running through the core of its structure. The aim of the Entrepreneurship with Digital Innovation course is to equip students for a variety of future careers, with a subject specialism in the area of Business and Management. The curriculum provides a broad and integrated academic foundation at level 4 with increasing specialisation opportunities at levels 5 and 6.

BA(Hons)Entrepreneurship with Digital Innovation and aims to:

  • Develop a balanced study programme that allows students to develop conceptual knowledge and practical skills in all key areas of business management, with a clear focus on digital innovation and its integration into business strategy and operations.
  • Provide opportunities for learners to gain a specialist knowledge in digital innovation, information systems and digital transformation accompanied by holistic development of their interpersonal and transferable skills.
  • Create a positive and stimulating learning environment that promotes student’s creativity, curiosity, resilience and innovative thinking.
  • Accommodate students with career support from the very beginning of the course both by embedding practical tasks into curriculum as well as providing diverse extracurricular networking and internship opportunities.
  • Support students in accelerating their innovative digital projects with mentoring and coaching.

Entrepreneurship with Creative Industries

BA (Hons) Entrepreneurship with Creative Industries aims to:

  • Provide a comprehensive study programme that allows students to get an in-depth understanding of major concepts and theories in all key areas of business management with a specific focus on Creative Industries.
  • Enable students to develop knowledge and skills required to transform businesses and other communities through creative ideas and practices.
  • Develop students’ entrepreneurial mind-set as characterized by creative problem-solving, leadership, proactivity and risk-taking approaches.
  • Provide opportunities for holistic development of students’ interpersonal and communication skills, with a strong focus on cultural awareness and cross-cultural communications.
  • Develop students’ understanding and sensitivity to ethical considerations faced by businesses within the creative industries.
  • Provide opportunities for students to apply their skills and knowledge to designing or producing cultural and creative services and products, while addressing interrelated cultural, social and technological issues.

TEAM university support diversity and implements its vision and mission statements throughout its operations. This is reflected in the architecture of the building and thematic styling of the rooms. Teaching rooms and social areas are personified to reflect various characters: scientists, artists, social entrepreneurs, investors, businessman for the range of countries, backgrounds, genders and abilities. The university dedicated areas to, Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, Stephen Hawking, J.K. Rowling, Pavel Durov, Sundar Pichai, Sheryl Sandberg, Warren Buffett, Elon Musk.

Focus in building design is on social and self-study areas. Those are scattered around the building and often serve a combined purpose. The Ground floor area is designed as an amphitheater with a variety of sitting arrangements, which is located in the open area and can be used for lectures, social interactions, study, extracurricular activities and other purposes throughout the day.

The vault of the main building is transferred into the learning resource center, which provides a multitude of spaces for learning. The design of the learning resource center is implemented with the philosophy of openness and transparency. The center contains lecture areas, personal study spaces, group work enclosures, café, book repositories, personal lockers, meeting rooms, video shooting facilities.

The first and second floor is a mixed area with formal teaching rooms, social areas and offices. The Mansard is given to the executive offices of the university and contains a variety of office spaces, meeting rooms and technical specific-purpose facilities.

Location

TEAM university is located in a vibrant rapidly developing area of Tashkent in Yashnobod District. Major urban development projects are taking place around the university including construction of the Tashkent overground metro (TEAM is served by 2-bekat), Parkent and Makhtumkili street urban development projects, Karasu housing development project. The area around the university is diverse and reflects the cultural mixes natural to Tashkent and Uzbekistan. There is a mosque, and Armenian orthodox Church of st. Pillip, Do’stobod mahalla, Korasuv channel embankment (Temur Malik street), Tuzel airport in the close proximity to TEAM.
