The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS)

The European Azerbaijan Society was an organization founded on 2 July 2008 in London, United Kingdom, with the main goals of supporting the development of Azerbaijani relations and promoting the country, while involving Azerbaijanis living and studying abroad into these activities. The organisation is now being liquidated as of 26 July 2018.

History

In 2006, Tale Heydarov established the London Azerbaijan Society. After that, in 2008, The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS) was established in London.[1]

Initially, the society had two directors – Nijat Heydarov and Tale Heydarov. They were in this position from 2008 until May 2013. From that date to present, the society's director and company secretary has been Lionel David Zetter.[2]

Shahin Namati-Nasab was the company secretary from 2008 to 2011. From 2011 to 2013 this position was occupied by Nijat Heydarov. In 2013, the first corporate secretary showed up on the stage – Legis Secretarial Services Limited. In 2014, it was replaced by Nsm Services Limited.[2]

Activities

The activities of TEAS are conducted in two main directions: culture and business.[1][3]

Culture

The main aim of this direction is to promote Azerbaijan's cultural heritage, traditions and history, as well as to raise awareness about the country in the international area.[4] In the framework of this program, TEAS organizes such events as book launches, various concerts and performances and exhibitions. Azerbaijan's history, culture, music, art and news are highlighted in TEAS TV Channel and TEAS Magazine.

This program is especially directed towards spreading information about Azerbaijan's literature, art, music, dances, folklore, cinema and theatre. As part of this program, they hold specific thematic cultural events.[5]

Business

Business direction of TEAS helps new companies and already established ones to build and maintain their businesses. Thus, TEAS helps with many business-related issues, for example, conducting thorough market analysis based on the company's requirements.[6] Moreover, TEAS offers broad range of services to its members, such as expert advice and consulting, business introductions and free access to all forums, networking events and conferences.[7]

Publications

Visions of Azerbaijan Magazine

Visions of Azerbaijan Magazine is a publication that issues once in two months and raises awareness of readers about culture and history of Azerbaijan.[8] It also covers such topics as international relations, international business, business cooperation and the emerging tourism industry. The magazine was founded in 2006 by Anglo-Azerbaijani Youth Society and is currently being published in Azerbaijan.[9]

Other publications

TEAS also conducts its own research about Azerbaijan's history and concludes the research by publishing those findings as part of TEAS Books series.[10] TEAS Brochures is another branch of TEAS Publications, which is directed into creating brochures that overview Azerbaijan's history, geography, politics, economics, business, trade and international relations.

Outreach & Engagement Programme

This program is aimed to collection and implementation of ideas that are directed to promotion of Azerbaijan's development. TEAS has supported and implemented the following projects:

Somali Aid

Victims of the Somali famine have been supported by TEAS, which helped to raise funds for providing necessary products to those people. More than 82,000 have been reached and helped out thanks to this programme.

Our Talent – Our Future

TEAS finances and supports the non-profit, non-governmental organization Our Talents - Our Future, which provides free education to academically talented children from low-income families in Sumgait, Azerbaijan.[11] Since 2011, around 200 children have benefited from this initiative.[12]

Photography Competition

The photography contest named "Azerbaijan Through the Lens" is an initiative of TEAS, which provides professional and amateur photographers to showcase their works while also demonstrating different aspects of Azerbaijan, such as its nature, history and culture. Overall, 750 photographs were received, with three of them being winners of the competition and presented during the opening of the exhibition in 2012.[13]

TEAS School

In 2011, the European-Azerbaijani school (EAS) was founded by TEAS. This is a private school, with the primary language being Azerbaijani. The school also conducts classes in Russian language. EAS provides students, who have achieved high scores during entrance or studying process with a scholarship opportunity.[14]
