Summary

On Halloween night, the residents of Bikini Bottom started to go trick-or-treating. SpongeBob, and Patrick are ready to go out for trick-or-treating, but SpongeBob, being dressed in a cute costume, makes Patrick think that his friend isn't scary. SpongeBob soon tells Patrick, the truth that he is scared of Halloween, because of the scary costumes, and decorations. Patrick makes a trick for SpongeBob, saying that, "Scary equals funny". Thinking the trick is real, SpongeBob and his friend, went out.

They first arrived at Sandy's house, parodying Dr. Frankenstein. After the friends, played a game of what is inside the jars, Sandy introduces them to her acorn monster, while Patrick was petrified, SpongeBob was amazed, because of the theory of "Scary equals funny". They later went to the two restaurants, The Krusty Krab (dressed as the Chum Bucket), and the Chum Bucket (dressed as The Krusty Krab), with each of the owners, telling their side of how their opponents, make their food. At the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs tells them how Plankton makes food, while at the Chum Bucket, Plankton and Karen tells them how Mr. Krabs makes his Krabby Patties. Both of the stories didn't scare SpongeBob though, which made both Mr. Krabs and Plankton, confused. Above the confusion, the Flying Dutchman is happy that today is Halloween, and everyone is getting scared tonight, however SpongeBob's laughter, has halted him, and he descends to the town below.

He later asked SpongeBob, why was he laughing, when he should be scared. When SpongeBob told him about the theory, The Flying Dutchman gets furious but later figured out that everything around SpongeBob is mostly laughable. He decides to give SpongeBob and Patrick, a thriller ride to make them scared, once and for all. As the two friends enter the ride, Patrick was terrified, but SpongeBob thinks its like an old haunted funhouse. This foils the Flying Dutchman's plans, and for his last straw, he abducts SpongBob's friends, leaving their bodies behind, but their souls taken, and caged. This however fools SpongeBob thinking that, this is all a big prank, however when sees his best friend, soulless, Patrick confesses that he lied to SpongeBob, only to get him to go trick-or-treating, saying that "scary doesn't mean funny, but terrifying".

His fear returned, SpongeBob flees to escape, but needs to save his friends first. Plankton being the smallest sets free, and tell the Flying Dutchman, to put his soul back into his own body, but the Flying Dutchman turns him into a mutated sour grouchy brainless version of him, as a mind-controlled servant. As the Flying Dutchman tries to roast his souls whole, SpongeBob bursts through with Sandy's acorn monster, and confronts him. But SpongeBob got dazed, after the Flying Dutchman attacks him, saying that the sponge is too stupid to be scary. The mutated Plankton, on the other hand, disagrees saying that SpongeBob's stupidity, is the scariest thing. Thinking this is false, the Flying Dutchman goes into SpongeBob's brain.

Inside the brain, various creatures of SpongeBob's imagination, greets him, but didn't seem to spook the Flying Dutchman. However, when SpongeBob, told the Flying Dutchman, that he doesn't want to see his old (naked) baby pictures, a giant naked baby version of SpongeBob appears and hugs him. This causing the Flying Dutchman to run away, and his ship to disappears, reuniting the souls to the appropriate bodies. At the end of the episode, SpongeBob, and his friends learned a valuable lesson, and celebrated Halloween together. plankton gets mistaken for candy at the end.
