Background

The New Toronto 3 is the final release of Lanez's five-album contract with Interscope Records. The project was intended to be released in March 2020, but was delayed due to Lanez's label issues, which he has aired through social media, writing on Instagram that he has had to "dumb down [his] creativity" and that his prior release, Chixtape 5, was the "closest thing [he's] been able to give [...] that had somewhat of the quality" he intends his future music to have.[4]

Singles

Three singles were released prior to the album, including the songs "Broke in a Minute", "Who Needs Love" and "Do the Most".[5]

The New Toronto 3 was met with generally positive reviews. At Album of the Year, the album received an average score of 75 out of 100, based on three reviews.[9] Jordan Bassett of NME gave the album four stars.[8] Bassett praised Lanez' growth as an artist stating "In a lot of ways, Tory Lanez feels like something of an old-school hip-hop star. In recent years, a generation of young rappers transcended SoundCloud to become true icons, sharing bracing admissions about mental health and drug use (many also doomed, from Lil Peep to Juice WRLD)."[8] He also stated that "Lanez is a more complex artist that many give him credit for."[8]

Commercial performance

The New Toronto 3 debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 with 64,000 album-equivalent units (including 5,000 copies in pure album sales) in its first week. It is Lanez' fifth US top-five album on that chart.[3] The album also accumulated a total of 76.1 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs.[3] In its second week, the album dropped to number ten on the chart, earning an additional 28,000 units.[10]

In his home country of Canada, the album debuted at number one on the Canadian Albums Chart, earning a total number of 10 million on-demand streams in its first week, becoming his second number-one debut in the country.[11]
