Development

"To have one of your favorite directors adapt your book into a film for Netflix is an honor and a dream. Paul Feig is a brilliant filmmaker and a master of tone — a perfect fit for the twists and turns of The School For Good & Evil. I have no doubt that he will make a true fairy tale classic."

Soman Chainani, Deadline Hollywood, May 2020[1]

Shortly after the publication of the first book of the series, Joe Roth partnered with Jane Startz Productions to acquire rights to produce a film based on the book.[8] Less than two weeks after the book's publication, Universal Studios won the auction and a seven-figure deal for book and scriptwriting fees. Roth, Startz and Palak Patel were appointed producers and Chainani and Malia Scotch Marmo were set to write the screenplay.[9][10] In May 2020, Netflix announced that is would be taking over with Paul Feig as director, Roth, Jeffrey Kirschenbaum, Startz, Laura Fischer and Feig producing and Zack Roth, Patricia Riggens and Chainani acting as executive producers.[11]

Casting

Fiona Weir was appointed casting director.[12] Weir opened casting for several roles.[13][14][15] On December 18, 2020, Feig tweeted that Sophia Anne Caruso and Sofia Wylie had been cast as the leads in the film.[16] In January 2021, Weir closed the two of the casting calls.[17]

Filming

Filming is at Belfast Harbour in Northern Ireland. Chief executive of Belfast Harbour Joe O'Neill said filming would take around seven months.[18] Production followed the British Film Commission safe working protocols.[19] Feig stated he was "absolutely thrilled" to be filming at Belfast Harbour.[20]
