The School of Life

The School of Life is an educational company that offers advice on life issues. It was founded by a number of intellectuals in 2008 and has branches in London (headquarters),[2] Antwerp, Amsterdam, Berlin, Istanbul, Mexico City, Paris and São Paulo [3][4] Seoul, Taipei and Tel Aviv.[5] The School offers a variety of programmes and services covering finding fulfilling work, mastering relationships, achieving calm, and understanding and changing the world.[6] The School also offers psychotherapy and bibliotherapy services and runs online and physical shops.[7] The School has a significant channel on YouTube, with 6.2 million subscribers; it publishes one new video a week.

History

The School of Life, founded by a number of writers and thinkers, including author Alain de Botton, is staffed by psychotherapists, artists and educators.[8] The faculty includes philosophers Mark Vernon, Robert Rowland Smith and writer John Armstrong.[9]

Publishing

In 2012, The School of Life started to publish books. It invited six guest authors (including Philippa Perry and John Armstrong) to publish 12,000 word books in partnership with the publishers Macmillan (UK) and Picador (USA). Some critics found these books shallow and unhelpful: "Yet the real issue...is not simply a lack of depth but one of purpose: they are certainly shallow in their philosophy, but they are not particularly useful either. The books are combination platters of soft science, anecdotal case studies (some real, some fictional), and exercises or suggestions about steps the reader could take to further his or her goal."[10] Some critics suggested that selling philosophical ideas as therapy was problematic, but others suggested the approach had merit: "But even those who are cynical about the combination of profit and philosophy may find The School of Life’s non-fiction series substantive."[11]

After the publication of these six titles, in 2016, The School of Life changed its approach to publishing. It started its own publishing press, The School of Life Press, and now writes books in-house. It has published over fifty books so far - including an extensive range of titles on mental health for children. In 2019, a collection of the School of Life's ideas was published under the title: 'The School of Life: An Emotional Education.'
