Synopsis

Centuries ago, an Evil Serpent demon was born from the desires of human. Four masters from four different sects gathered together to seal the snake within the Imperial City. As the years pass, Four Guardians were constructed in order to prevent the Evil Serpent from escaping and wreaking havoc on the rest of the world. Since then, four different masters would travel to the Imperial City to awaken the Four Guardians to trap the snake. With the threat of the Evil Serpent rising once more, four different masters come together once more: Hongruo, Longye, Bo Ya, and Qing Ming.

Qing Ming, the disciple of Zhongxing, is sent to the Imperial City after his master dies and proclaims him as the Yin-Yang Master. Heeding the instructions of his master, he brings along the Fangyue sword, which his master had used to slay the Evil Serpent in the past. Upon his arrival, he encounters and gets off on the wrong foot with Bo Ya. During the first night of their stay, Master Hongruo is killed in his sleep by a hair demon. The Empress orders Princess Chang Ping to investigate Hongruo's death, and instates another master He Shouyue to replace Master Hongruo. Noticing that He Shouyue bears an uncanny resemblance to Zhongxing, Qing Ming confronts him. He Shouyue reveals himself as a Spirit Guardian of Zhongxing, sent to protect the Empress, and is slowly dying as a result of Zhongxing's death.

One night, Longye is accused of attempting to assassinate the Empress by He Shouyue. Longye asserts that she is innocent but she too is killed by the hair demon. Later that night, Qing Ming confesses to Bo Ya that Longye had apparently revealed to him that the Princess had been the true culprit before she died. Bo Ya, who had grown up with the Princess, accuses He Shouyue of being the one behind the assassination. They decide to confront them separately to not let their bias stand in the way. Meanwhile, Princess Chang Ping angrily confronts He Shouyue for killing Master Hongruo and Longye. He Shouyue reasons that their deaths were justifiable and that in order to keep their relationship and their plans of awakening the Evil Serpent a secret, Bo Ya and Qing Ming must die.

During Qing Ming's confrontation with Chang Ping, she is seemingly killed by the hair demon. The hair demon reveals to Qing Ming that sixty years ago. her lover had killed her in order to gain the love of the Princess. Realizing that the Princess hasn't aged a day in the past sixty years, Qing Ming surmises that the Princess must be the Empress and the true vessel of the Evil Serpent. He and Bo Ya confront them together and Chang Ping discloses to them that in order to save He Shouyue, he must become the new vessel of the Evil Serpent, rendering him immortal. While Chang Ping gives birth to the serpent, she remembers her first meeting with Zhongxing, her true love. Years ago, the two had fallen in love. Knowing that desire would strengthen the Evil Serpent, Zhongxing reluctantly left the Imperial City to prevent Chang Ping's feelings and desire from growing. Before leaving, he created He Shouyue in order to protect Chang Ping.

Chang Ping and He Shouyue flee on the Evil Serpent, with Bo Ya and Qing Ming pursuing them. After noticing the chaos created by the serpent, Chang Ping attempts to commit suicide with He Shouyue but is swallowed by the serpent. Qing Ming summons his Spirit Guardians after Bo Ya notices that only three of the Four Guardians have awakened. He Shouyue appears and starts battling the Spirit Guardians, killing one in the process. Bo Ya leaves to wake the last of the Four Guardians, the Vermilion Bird, and requests that Qing Ming instates him as his Spirit Guardian. During this process, Bo Ya collapses and awakens as the Vermilion Bird. While the Vermilion Bird and He Shouyue battle each other, Qing Ming teleports himself inside of the serpent. He shows Chang Ping the last memory he has with Zhongxing, who confesses his love to Chang Ping and encourages her to do the right thing. Qing Ming and Chang Ping teleport outside, and Chang Ping kills herself. Distracted by this, He Shouyue is impaled by the Vermilion Bird with the Fangyue sword. As the serpent collapses, the Vermilion Bird sacrifices himself in order to save Qing Ming. He Shouyue rises from the Evil Serpent's body and hurls the sword at Bo Ya's unconscious body. Qing Ming throws himself in front of the sword and reaches a moment of clarity where he realizes the true meaning of being a Yin-Yang Master. He successfully deflects the sword from Bo Ya and stabs He Shouyue.

Bo Ya awakens, and the two friends thank each other for their deeds. While Qing Ming boards a ferry to travel home, he and Bo Ya share a final glance. Bo Ya plays the flute to see him off and shoots an arrow to the sky to guide Qing Ming home. The film ends with the saying, "Qing Ming shines brightly like a star, Bo Ya's bow springs with joy", and a scene showing that Longye is still alive.
